Carkeek 12 Hour is a small fall trail race in Carkeek Park in Seattle, with runners circling a 1.93-mile loop from 7 AM to 7 PM. A 6-hour option runs from 9 AM to 3 PM on the same course for those not wanting to spend the whole day. The race is capped at 50 runners, keeping the event quiet, personal, and closer to an old-school ultra than a large production. It usually occurs on Halloween weekend, so costumes are part of the day rather than an afterthought.
The loop mixes rolling trails, steep stairs, short flatter sections, fall tree cover, and views toward Puget Sound. Each lap climbs 436 feet, so the distance accumulates quickly and the race serves well as training for technical trail ultras. Laps are counted with star stickers, bibs are handmade, and the aid table offers candy, coffee, and ultra snacks. Proceeds support local trails and Endless Trails operating costs, the race avoids paper products, and most aid and raffle prizes come from Seattle-area businesses. Random prizes, costume awards, pet costumes, and Glenn Tachiyama race photos all fit the same low-key, homemade feel.
