The Rugged Red Trail Half Marathon begins and ends at Natural Bridge Campground in Slade, Kentucky, directing runners onto private land within the Red River Gorge area. This fall trail half marathon features a 13.1-mile loop with 2,864 feet of elevation gain. Its difficulty is moderate, with runnable trails interspersed with short, steep segments. The event has been held for over ten years and provides support to the search and rescue teams operating in the gorge.
The course winds past arches and an overlook, specifically Golden Cathedral Arch, Timothy Branch Overlook, and Adventure Mountain Arch. Four arches are recognized by runners familiar with the route. The race is cup-less; participants must carry their own bottle or hydration pack. Water or hydration will be available at the start and at five points along the course. Participants may include teams, younger runners, club trail runners, and individuals camping at the start-finish area. The finish line offers the atmosphere of a completed long trail-running day, with medals, complimentary photos, coffee, a BBQ lunch, beer for racers aged 21 and over, a DJ, massages, raffle prizes, age-group awards, and substantial volunteer support.
