The Ningen Shiodashi Konbu Marathon begins and ends on the sand at Katase Enoshima Nishihama Beach in Kanagawa Prefecture. The Kaifu Terrace wood deck and stone-paved area of Prefectural Shonan Coast Park serve as the race base. This summer running event is for adults, offering a full marathon of 42.195 km, alongside 5 km and 2.5 km options for those preferring the beach-park setting without the full distance. The full marathon must be completed within five hours, and each shorter race has a one-hour limit.
The name, “ningen shiodashi konbu,” roughly translates to people sweating salt like kombu, fitting for a hot-season race along the Shonan coast. The full marathon entry fee is 7,000 yen, with all participants receiving a prize. The event proceeds regardless of weather, meaning runners should anticipate a coastal race exposed to the elements, unlike a sheltered city course. This year marks the 31st edition, indicating a race with established local continuity, returning to Enoshima’s west beach.
