Bend sits at 1,082 metres on the eastern slope of the Cascades, making it Oregon's premier high-altitude running and cycling hub. Runners tackle the Beat Beethoven 5K and Fall Foot Races on relatively flat valley terrain, though the surrounding ponderosa forest offers trail running with genuine elevation gain. Cyclists dominate here—the Cascade Cycling Classic Criterium and the legendary Oregon Trail Gravel (563km) draw serious competitors; the gravel network radiates from town across high desert and volcanic plateau, with the Cascades crest just 30km west offering alpine passes above 1,500 metres.
