2. Luftschifflauf

The Luftschifflauf begins on the apron of Essen/Mülheim Airport, proceeding over the taxiway to the airport’s wide runway. This is a limited-entry race featuring a flat, fast course. The setup is unusual, with running occurring on ground typically used by aircraft. A Bambini run is also part of the event, catering to families as well as runners seeking fast times. The route bypasses tight corners and elevation changes, continuing across the open airport grounds before concluding inside the WDL airship hangar. This finish is the race’s distinctive feature: rather than a typical road-race chute, participants enter a large hangar constructed for airships. Medals are awarded to finishers, and the event area provides on-site food and refreshments.
