Herdecke’s Nikolauslauf is a 9.6 km road race held in early December. It begins on Ruhruferweg beneath the Ruhr bridge. Participants start at 2:00 p.m., with walkers departing two minutes later. The finish line is located on the grass outside the rowing club’s boathouse. The event is open to participants aged 14 and older, accommodating runners, walkers, and teams competing for individual and team rankings. All finishers receive a commemorative medal. Age-group winners are awarded trophies, the largest team earns a reward, and a bonus is given to anyone who sets a new course record.
