Towerrun Mainz challenges runners to ascend the Bonifatiustürme, twin high-rise towers in Mainz. Firefighters participate wearing full protective gear. The event, organized by the Freiwillige Feuerwehr Mainz-Stadt, returns in September. It was first established to mark the department’s 175th anniversary. The firefighter climb is straightforward: 23 floors, 407 steps, and approximately 25 kilograms of equipment.
Approximately 270 firefighters competed in the Mainz Towerrun, using the ascent as a demanding stress test with their standard duty load. The competition is open to others; additional runners also climbed the 23 floors, and Mainz mayor Nino Haase participated. Competitors traveled up to 250 kilometers, with entries including fire crews and a mother-son team from Oppenheim.
