Ecocamino is an ultramarathon held in late October in Galicia, covering approximately 50 kilometers along sections of the French Way of the Camino de Santiago. The race focuses on Santiago de Compostela, concluding at Monte do Gozo, the hill where pilgrims traditionally first see the city. It is a single-distance event, with all organizational focus on the 50K format, and it is listed in the UTMB Index 50K category.
The course incorporates historic Camino locations, with aid stations situated in places like Boente, Arzúa, A Salceda, O Pedrouzo, and Lavacolla before the final destination at Monte do Gozo. The route features around 1,264 meters of elevation gain within its 48-50K distance, indicating it is more than a simple point-to-point road race. Ecocamino also integrates sustainability into its race rules and operations, emphasizing waste reduction, low-impact methods, and carbon-neutral efforts. The Deputación da Coruña provides support for the race, and the participant field is modest, offering an atmosphere more akin to a focused Camino ultra than a large-scale city event.
