Grandvi'trail - Grandvillars
Grandvi'trail is a local trail-running event in Grandvillars, offering race options for beginners and those seeking a longer challenge. The event features a 7 km Trail découverte, an 11 km trail with 200 meters of elevation gain, and a 21 km trail with 500 meters of elevation gain.
The courses are designed as trail races, not road races, with the primary decision being the desired distance and elevation. Organized by Les coureurs de l'Allaine, the recurring "Trail découverte" designation indicates a community race focused on accessible off-road running, rather than a demanding mountain course.
Foulées de l'Ill
Every race at the Foulées de l'Ill concludes in Ensisheim, with runners beginning from various villages situated along the Ill river. This road race in the Haut-Rhin region features a half marathon, a two-person half-marathon relay, a 10 km race, and a 5 km race. The courses are flat, designed for consistent pacing rather than elevation gain. The half marathon begins in Niederhergheim, the 10 km in Munwiller, and the 5 km in Réguisheim. The event takes place in mid-October, organized by Team Com in conjunction with the Communauté de Communes du Centre Haut Rhin.
The half marathon and relay route traces the Ill river through nine municipalities: Niederhergheim, Oberhergheim, Biltzheim, Niederentzen, Oberentzen, Munwiller, Meyenheim, Réguisheim, and Ensisheim. Relay exchanges occur in Munwiller, which is also the starting point for the 10 km race. The 5 km event is open to runners and walkers, and it benefits Arc en ciel de Bernard, a charity supporting cancer patients. All finishers are awarded a medal, and participants have the option to reserve a shuttle service during registration for transport from Ensisheim back to their respective starting villages.
Trai'elle - Kaysersberg-Vignoble
Belfortrail
Belfortrail begins and ends in Giromagny, within France's Territoire de Belfort. Runners venture into the mountains surrounding the Ballon d'Alsace in mid-October. This solo trail event offers three distances: approximately 13 km, 27 km, and 54-56 km. These cover a range from a challenging short mountain run to a full day on rugged terrain. Significant climbing is present at every distance: around 600 meters of ascent for the 13 km route, 1,300 meters for the 27 km route, and 3,100 meters of elevation change for the longest course.
The courses traverse wild trails through forests, mountain landscapes, and areas near lakes and ponds, with all loops concluding back in Giromagny. The long race allows participants 11 hours and features only three aid stations, emphasizing a self-sufficient atmosphere. Belfortrail is a stop on the Trail Tour National circuit, yet it maintains a local rock'n'roll character with the motto "Fort comme un roc'k !". The longest distance attracts a considerable number of participants, with approximately 600 runners in a recent edition, primarily individuals experienced with steep, demanding trail races.
Semi-Marathon de Mulhouse
The Semi-Marathon de Mulhouse is an evening road half marathon in Mulhouse, in the Haut-Rhin department of France's Grand Est region. The main race is the standard 21.0975 km distance, with a flat urban course and about 50 metres of climbing. Runners can also enter a relay with two or more people, and the event includes children's and junior races, so it is not only for solo half-marathoners. It is held around early spring, and the organizer presents it as a responsible event with an environmental focus.
The half marathon uses one loop around the Stade de l'Ill area and threads through central Mulhouse rather than heading into the countryside. The route crosses the Ill canal, then passes Square Steinbach, Place de la Réunion, the central train station, the new basins, Casernes Lefebvre, the exhibition park, and the Cité de l'Automobile. Recent fields have been over 1,000 runners for the half marathon, with more than 200 in the relay. After the race, the local food angle is very Alsatian: bretzel, choucroute, and kougelhopf are part of the post-run picture.
Muttenz Marathon
The Muttenz Marathon takes place in late April in Muttenz, Switzerland. It offers a marathon (42.195 km), a half marathon (21.0975 km), a 10 km run, a 10 km walk, and races for children and juniors. The full marathon is the most popular event.
The course includes paved streets within Muttenz and paths through the surrounding countryside, blending urban and natural scenery. It caters to runners of various abilities, not exclusively experienced marathoners, with shorter races, a walking option, and youth events ensuring a wider appeal than just a single long-distance competition.
Trail du Grand Ballon
Twice a year, trail races ascend Grand Ballon, the Vosges' highest point, winding through the Ballons des Vosges Regional Natural Park in Haut-Rhin. The series centers on villages like Oderen and Willer-sur-Thur, designed for mountain running, not flat-road speed. The primary Trail du Grand Ballon offers five distances, ranging from an 8 km route with 290 m elevation gain to a 70 km race with 3,320 m gain. This allows the event to accommodate cautious newcomers, regular trail runners, and those seeking a long day in the mountains. Across all Grand Ballon events, participation now exceeds 6,000 runners annually.
The courses utilize the slopes surrounding Grand Ballon and, uniquely, may cross the summit itself; these are the only races in over 40 years granted such permission. Another Grand Ballon program begins in Willer-sur-Thur, passes through Goldbach-Altenbach, and presents three distinct choices: La Montee, a 14.2 km mountain race with 1,220 m of climb; the Defi du Grand Ballon, a 25 km trail loop toward the summit with 1,320 m of climb; and the Mini-Trail de l'Ostein, a 9 km nature race with 350 m of climb for those trying trail running in a less demanding format. La Montee is part of the Trophee des Vosges, targeting Espoir, Senior, and Master runners aged 20 and older, while the Mini-Trail is open to a broader audience.
