The Drop Skipton begins with runners surrendering phones, watches, maps, GPS units, compasses, and other navigation aids. They are then blindfolded and boarded onto a bus. This late-December navigation race, held in Skipton, North Yorkshire, has a straightforward objective: return to the event centre on foot from an undisclosed location. The distances are 6, 10, and 15 miles as the crow flies, meaning the actual distance covered on foot will be considerably longer.
Participants navigate without a marked course, an official route, or any directions after their release. The 15-mile course, the original and most demanding, retains its challenge in a shorter 10-mile format. The 6-mile Drop is reserved for those unfamiliar with the area, as local knowledge would diminish the intended uncertainty. The event combines elements of trail running, urban route-finding, and problem-solving under duress, where each navigational error increases the total distance.
