Mitteldeutscher Marathon
The Mitteldeutscher Marathon is a point-to-point marathon in central Germany, running from Leipzig to Halle (Saale) in the autumn. It starts at Leipzig’s Elsterflutbecken near the Festwiese Sportforum and finishes on Halle’s Marktplatz, covering the full distance between two neighboring cities rather than looping around one urban center. The race is open to adults and uses net timing, with pacers offered for 3:30, 3:45, 4:00, and 4:15 finish targets.
The course follows the classic Leipzig-to-Halle route, a line with old marathon history: it was first used for a German marathon in 1925. Organizers describe it as fast, but it still has firm cutoffs, including intermediate time checks late in the race and a fixed finish-line closing time. The wider event also includes a half marathon and a 10k, while marathon runners receive practical point-to-point support such as event-day regional transport between Halle and Leipzig, bag drop, clothing transport to the finish, a finisher medal, and post-race massages at the Roter Turm on Halle’s Marktplatz.
Mitteldeutscher Marathon Halle (Saale)
The Mitteldeutscher Marathon connects Leipzig and Halle (Saale). The marathon and relay begin at Leipzig's Elsterflutbecken near the Festwiese Sportforum, with all races concluding on Halle's market square. This road-running series includes a full marathon, marathon relay, half marathon, 10-kilometer run, 10-kilometer walk, children's and school races, and a 2.7-kilometer Salzwirkerlauf. The event has taken place annually since 2002 and ranks among the larger running events in Central Germany.
The longest race offers a point-to-point course from Leipzig to Halle. Shorter races commence within Halle, keeping the day's focus on the city's market square. The half marathon and the short introductory run are designed as opportunities to explore Halle on foot. The marathon relay divides the full marathon into four segments of approximately 12.1, 11.4, 9.5, and 10.1 kilometers. The program accommodates beginners, recreational runners, club athletes, walkers, children, and performance-oriented runners. Time limits vary from one hour for the Salzwirkerlauf to six hours for the marathon.
Köstritzer Parklauf
Köstritzer Parklauf is a cross-country race held in late October in Bad Köstritz, Germany. It takes place in and around Köstritzer Park, away from the standard track. The event includes short races for children and youth, alongside longer distances for adults and masters, ranging from 500 m up to a 12 km main race.
The park setting defines the event. Runners begin in the park, passing dahlias still in bloom during autumn. The race attracts numerous local and regional clubs, particularly from Thuringia, with participants also coming from Saxony and Bavaria. The main race has hosted strong regional competitors like Sebastian Seyfarth of Gera and Katrin Oelmann of Bürgel. This event marks its 27th edition.
Stadtmeisterschaft Cross Leipzig
The Stadtmeisterschaft Cross Leipzig is a cross-country race held in November at Stadion des Friedens on Max-Liebermann-Straße in Leipzig. It is included in the Stadtrangliste Leipzig, contributing to the city's running standings rather than being a standalone event. The race options are 10 km, 7 km, and 3 km, with events for children and youth alongside adult races.
The race is organized by Leipzig athletics clubs, with SG Motor Gohlis-Nord Leipzig having a strong connection to the event, and the Leipziger Leichtathletik Verband listed as an organizer in previous years. Participants include children, youth runners, active adults, and masters, making it a local championship for all age groups. This race occurs late in the Stadtrangliste season, preceding the Auewaldlauf, which is the final scoring race. The series connects to Leipzig’s Läuferball tradition. One past edition was canceled, but the event has otherwise been held consistently in its November cross-country slot.
Leipziger Auewaldlauf
The Leipziger Auewaldlauf begins at the LVB-Sportanlage on Neue Linie in Connewitzer Holz, leading runners into Leipzig’s southern Auewald. This understated November running event offers 20 km, 10 km, 5 km, and 2 km distances, catering to long-distance runners, club racers, casual participants, and children. The race has taken place annually since 1979 and is organized by the running group of SG Leipziger Verkehrsbetriebe.
The 10 km course is a full loop, and the 5 km course is a shorter loop; both are flat. The event is included in the Stadtrangliste Leipzig, providing local runners with an incentive to compete beyond a single performance. Participant numbers typically range from 301 to 500. The event's logistics are straightforward: public transport provides access, registration can be completed online or in person, a refreshment station is located at the finish, and results, photos, and printable certificates are available post-race.
SHC – StoneBreakTrail
SHC – StoneBreakTrail offers a range of distances instead of a single main event. The youngest children compete in an 800-meter race, children aged 8 to 12 run 2.4 kilometers, and older runners can select from 5K, 10K, or a 21K half marathon. The children’s races commence at approximately 10:00 AM, with the longer distances starting afterward.
The course winds through rolling hills, dense forest, and open fields, providing an off-road, nature-focused experience distinct from a flat city road race. The 5K is suitable for beginners and walkers, the 10K allows faster runners to increase their pace, and the half marathon presents the primary challenge for seasoned trail runners. The event is designed for individuals who enjoy physical activity, accommodating both first-time participants and regular trail racers.
Sonnenwendlauf Markkleeberg Winter-Edition
The Sonnenwendlauf Markkleeberg Winter-Edition is a road race around Cospudener See in Markkleeberg, on the southern edge of Leipzig. It is part of the Sparkassen-Sonnenwendlauf series and is timed for the winter solstice, with runners participating on the shortest day of the year.
The route is a lap around the lake, starting from the event area at Ostuferweg near the Cospudener Combüse. After the run, participants gather by a solstice fire with music, grilled food, and drinks. All entry fees support a good cause, making the event a local running occasion and a midwinter fundraiser.
Silvesterlauf am Auensee
Silvesterlauf am Auensee is a 10 km road race in Leipzig, Germany, held on New Year's Eve with a noon start. The start and finish are located at An der Elster 35, near Auensee in the city's northwest. Registration is available via the organizer's website.
Laufclub Auensee Leipzig e.V. organizes the race as part of its annual schedule, which includes events like the Messepokallauf, the Abendlauf with the Kinder-Lipsiade, and a 100 km run at Auensee. The club has about 100 members, ranging in age from their mid-twenties to over 80. It features a dedicated ultra-running group and a triathlon section, indicating the Silvesterlauf originates from a local running community, not a commercial event organizer.
Nellschützer Silvester-Lauf
The Nellschütz New Year's Eve Run is a 10 km road race held in Lützen, Saxony-Anhalt, on the morning of December 31st, beginning at 10:00 AM. The race commences near the church in Nellschütz and has been a fixture on the local running schedule since 2000. As an officially registered event within the German athletics framework, it includes standard organizational elements, such as insurance and scheduling coordination with other nearby races.
This event functions more as a community gathering to conclude the year rather than a competition focused on achieving personal bests. It marks the end of the Burgenlandkreis running season, and participants typically run together or in small, conversational groups rather than at maximum speed. The 10 km course features a dedicated refreshment station, and the finishing tradition brings all runners to the Kitze family's courtyard, where hot food, tea, and mulled wine are offered post-race.
