Turin Marathon
The Turin Marathon begins in Piazza Castello, at the heart of Turin, and guides runners through a 42.195 km road circuit, returning them to the same square. It takes place annually in November, having previously been held in spring. The modern iteration of the race originated in the late twentieth century. The day features a competitive marathon for registered athletics federation participants and a public, non-competitive run, awarding prizes to the leading male and female finishers in the main event.
The route departs Turin, winding through surrounding towns such as Moncalieri, Nichelino, Beinasco, Orbassano, Rivalta, Rivoli, and Collegno, before heading east towards the finish at Piazza Castello. The elite competition typically involves international professionals, notably Kenyan and Ethiopian athletes competing against strong Italian runners, while the public run attracts a broader range of participants. Race day also incorporates the Stratorino, a 6 km fun run and walk, and a 1 km junior marathon for children, with funds from these activities directed to charity. The event's history extends further back: Turin hosted regular international marathons in the early twentieth century, and the current race commenced under the Susavigliana name on a Susa-to-Avigliana course before adopting its present Turin-focused structure.
