22½ annual Potomac River Run Marathon & Half

The Potomac River Run Marathon & Half begins and ends at Fletcher's Cove in Washington, D.C., offering marathon and half-marathon distances along the C&O Canal Towpath. This spring trail race coincides with World Laughter Day, and its organizers describe it as the most accessible trail marathon and half in the United States. The route keeps participants on the towpath, avoiding city streets, creating a canal-side trail atmosphere rather than a large urban marathon feel. All finishers receive a Dan Kain Trophies medallion. Awards are presented immediately after each runner completes the race. The recovery zone features refreshments on the towpath, followed by a post-race picnic. The event is also a component of the SHF Grand Prix; runners completing three SHF half or full marathons in the series are eligible for a cash prize. FindMyMarathon voters selected it as Washington, D.C.’s leading marathon in a poll. The series also features a subsequent 23½-mile event held in remembrance of Dean Shulman and Wendy Martinez.

Colonel James L. Fowler initially proposed the concept as a Marine Corps Reserve Marathon, aiming for community outreach, recruiting, and providing local Marines a chance to qualify for the Boston Marathon. Charity runners, service members, club runners, and first-time marathoners all compete together.

ボルチモアのランナーは、近場で効率的に走ってるよ。みんなPatterson Park、Federal Hill Park、Druid Hill Park、Herring Run、Lake Montebello、Stony Run Trail、Jones Falls Trail、Gwynns Falls Trail、NCR trail、あとBWI loopあたりでbase miles稼いでる感じかな。インターバルで追い込みたい時はDruid Hill Parkで坂トレできるし、Greenspringから公園に戻るルートは、いい感じでキツいよ。Baltimore FrontrunnersはPatterson Park、Washington Monument、Canton Panera Breadで集まってるし、どんなペースの人でも大歓迎だよ。Baltimore Road Runners Club、Charm City Run、Falls Road Running、A Tribe Called Runとかがイベントをたくさん企画してるから、飽きないね。Baltimore Running Festival Half MarathonとBaltimore Women's Classic 5Kがメインのレースかな。

ボルチモアのサイクリストは、fall lineのおかげで色んな種類のライドが楽しめるんだ。Z2で距離を稼ぎたい時は、Jones Falls Trail、Gwynns Falls Trail、Maryland Ave bike lane、B&A Trail、BWI to Annapolis、Eastern Shoreあたりを走ってる人が多いね。Baltimore Bicycling Club (BBC) は、毎日色んなペースのグループライドを企画してるし、Instructional Cycling Series、Chestertown Weekend、Civil War Centuryみたいなイベントもあるよ。Loch Raven Reservoirまで行けば、ちょっとした登りもある良いループコースがあるし、Meadowood Hampstead Loopっていうルートだと88.8 kmで1,073 mアップとかもできるよ。Druid Hill Parkの動物園の裏にはsingletrackが隠れてるし、Stony Run、Sinai、Coldspring Newtown、Leakin、Leon Dayあたりはcyclocrossっぽい雰囲気で走れる場所だね。

春と秋は気候が穏やかだから、ボルチモアで一番トレーニングしやすい時期だね。夏は蒸し暑い日が多いし、午後はChesapeake Bayからの風が吹くこともあるから、ロングランとかgran fondoの準備、BBCの定常ライドなんかはみんな早朝にスタートしてるよ。7月でも、しっかり水分補給してペースを守れば大丈夫。冬は肌寒い日もあれば暖かい日もあるけど、時々雪が降るよ。長くて寒い時期は、ランナーはTrack Tuesdayのワークアウトとか、確実な公園のループコースを選ぶことが多いかな。サイクリストはBBCの冬のソーシャルイベントで交流して、Taneytown season openerの盛り上がりをきっかけに、また長距離を走るようになる感じだね。
