The Kyoto Isshu Grand Traverse is a 60km trail race beginning at Arashiyama Park Kameyamacho and concluding at Bishamon-do in Yamashina, connecting Kyoto's western edge with its eastern hills. Held in September, it allows runners 12 hours to complete over 3,170m of elevation gain. Entry is capped at 400 participants, targeting seasoned trail runners who are at least 20 years old and have previously completed a trail race of 30km or more.
The course crosses Kyoto’s mountain ring, passing through locations like Kiyotaki, Takao, Kurama, Ohara, and Mt. Hiei. The ascent of Mt. Hiei presents a significant challenge, with six aid stations positioned along the extensive point-to-point route. The event does not offer overall placement awards, emphasizing completion of the entire traverse over competing for a podium finish. The name “Grand Traverse” signifies a grand journey across, accurately reflecting a course that guides runners along Kyoto’s outer mountain perimeter before descending into Yamashina.
