The PSS Imperial Palace Health Running event is a modest race and training session in Tokyo, centered around the Imperial Palace. The start and finish lines are located near the clock tower within Sakuradamon Gate. Participants can choose from 5 km, 10 km, 20 km, or a 20 km relay. Entry fees are low, and the event is limited to 100 individual runners and 25 relay teams. This race is held under hot conditions, with heat countermeasures in place. The organization is straightforward, featuring manual timing with a stopwatch and printer, and distances suitable for fitness checks or marathon preparation.
The course follows the Imperial Palace loop, allowing runners to concentrate on their pace rather than route finding. PSS describes it as "Japan’s most relaxed race," a sentiment reflected in its flexible rules: late arrivals are permitted, same-day registration is an option, runners may change events on the day, and those who finish early will still have their completed distance recorded. The organizer can even establish unofficial distances, like 15 km, if needed. Feedback indicates it is a cost-effective option for long runs, pace practice, and fitness assessments, particularly for individuals who struggle with consistent solo distance training. Nevertheless, cutoffs are in effect, including lap requirements for the 20 km and 10 km races, meaning the relaxed environment does not equate to unlimited time.
