Robinette's Orienteering hosts a race in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where runners and hikers seek checkpoints around Robinette's Apple Haus & Winery. The event takes place in late summer, offering flexible morning starts and concluding at noon. This is a navigation race, not a marked course; participants, either solo or in teams of two to five, select their own paths, aim to find the most checkpoints, and are scored first by the number of checkpoints found, then by their finishing time.
The checkpoint area typically spans 4 to 5 miles across Robinette's North Woods, South Orchards, Provin Trails, and Kuyper College. The course transitions from open orchard terrain to pine and hardwood forests, campus paths, a sand dune, and some off-trail segments. Much of the ground features light vegetation and numerous trails. Each participant receives a detailed LIDAR map, and a pre-race navigation clinic is available for beginners. Categories include solo men, solo women, and male, female, or mixed teams. Top finishers receive wood medals, with additional awards for the leading participants in each division. Following the race, participants are offered Robinette's donuts and cider.
