The Swammie Shuffle 200 is a small, self-supported ultramarathon fundraiser centered on Sandbridge Beach in Virginia Beach. Participants run over 200 miles, approximately 321.9 km, on an out-and-back course to the Cape Hatteras lighthouse in North Carolina and return. The event collects donations and promotes awareness for veteran suicide prevention and related services, with all proceeds divided between Awareness N Action and Mission22. In-person participation is limited to 30 individuals, making it more of a personal challenge than a large-scale event.
The course begins with about 20 miles of beach between Sandbridge Beach and Corolla, then heads south through the Outer Banks, passing the Corolla, Bodie Island, and Cape Hatteras lighthouses. A significant portion of the middle section utilizes sidewalks and road shoulders, and provisions can be scarce as towns and stores might be located roughly 20 miles apart. There are no aid stations, crews are advised, and runners may not travel in a vehicle, although they can briefly rest in one while stationary. The final miles involve returning through beach terrain in the back bay refuge, where participants must remain off the beach from 30 minutes after sunset until 30 minutes before sunrise.
