The TCS London Marathon begins in Greenwich, near the Cutty Sark, sending almost 50,000 participants over 42.195 km of London each spring. Since 1981, when over 20,000 applied and 7,747 were accepted, it has become one of the Abbott World Marathon Majors. Elite fields compete for prize money while mass runners share the streets. The event's scale is immense yet retains a public atmosphere: approximately 750,000 spectators line the route, millions watch on the BBC in the UK, and the broadcast extends to over 196 countries. The course is fast and flat, with three start areas (blue, red, and green) before the field passes London landmarks like Tower Bridge, the London Eye, Big Ben, and Westminster. The finish on The Mall places runners before Buckingham Palace, the same stretch that saw the race's one millionth finisher. Chris Brasher and John Disley developed the event after observing the New York and Boston marathons, with charity integrated from the start. Runners have raised over £1 billion, and the London Marathon Foundation has granted more than £100 million to sport and physical-activity projects. World and course records add significance to the elite competition, but the day also embraces club runners, charity participants, wheelchair racers, and first-time marathoners on the same London roads.
