The Kofugahara Highland Trail Run takes place in Kanuma, Tochigi Prefecture, on the Kofugahara Highlands in late August. Participants can select from 30 km, 17 km, and 9 km courses. A distinct category is available for those running with their dogs. The event was relocated from September to earlier in the year, as the highland location offers temperatures approximately five degrees cooler than the surrounding lowlands. The course utilizes ancient Shugendo trails, paths associated with Japan’s mountain ascetic practices, indicating it is not a simple park run with moderate inclines. Organizers characterize the race as a challenging mountain course featuring steep ascents and descents. Specific regulations apply to the dog category: a maximum of two runners can accompany a single dog, and the second runner must register for the S-short course.
