The PSS Imperial Palace Health Running event is a small running race held at Tokyo's Imperial Palace, starting and finishing near the clock tower at Sakuradamon. The July event features 5km, 10km, 20km, and a 20km relay. The longer races begin earlier in the morning than the shorter ones. It functions as both a race and a practice session. Individual entry fees are 1,000 yen, timing is manual using a stopwatch and printer, and the event hosts approximately 100 to 499 runners. While beginners are welcome, the longer distances have strict cut-off times, with 20km participants needing to complete the fourth lap by mid-morning.
The course follows the Imperial Palace loop, offering a straightforward lap-based format in central Tokyo instead of a point-to-point road race. PSS refers to it as “Japan’s most relaxed race.” This is supported by flexible rules: late arrivals, same-day entries, same-day distance changes, finishing early without a DNF, and even custom distances like 15km are permitted. Participant feedback highlights its affordability, ease of entry, and utility for marathon training, pace runs, interval work, or fitness checks. Participation awards consist of a sports drink, an izakaya meal ticket, and a magnetic chip, with all participants receiving an award.
