CASA Superhero 5K and Kids 1 Mile je taký rodinný pretekový deň na Percival’s Island Trail v Lynchburgu, Virginia. Bude tam meraná 5K-čka, nemeraná 5K chôdza a míľový fun run pre deti. Na 5K beh sa môžu prihlásiť bežci od 8 rokov a štartuje ako prvá, chôdza ide pár minút po nej. Detský beh je pre deti do 12 rokov a beží sa neskôr dopoludnia. Registrácia sa otvára v júli a na mieste v deň pretekov sa už prihlásiť nedá. Limit pre 5K beh a chôdzu je spolu 550 účastníkov.
Trať vedie po James River trail. Celá akcia má superhrdinskú tému: 5K bežci a chodci dostanú tričko alebo plášť, swag bag a medailu v cieli, zatiaľ čo deti dostanú plášť a medailu. Na 5K-čke ocenia troch najlepších v každej vekovej a rodovej kategórii. Detská míľa je nemeraná a štartuje sa vo vlnách, asi minútu po sebe. Rodičia potrebujú bezpečnostný náramok na prihlásenie a odhlásenie detí. V niektorých vlnách je povolené, aby rodič bežal alebo kráčal vedľa dieťaťa. V Lynchburgu si miestni dávajú kopcové tréningy, ale vždy sa nájde aj tieň. Na Blackwater Creek Trail majú bežci 3 míle po asfaltovej železničnej dráhe, a bočné cestičky ti to vedia natiahnuť aj cez 13 míľ. Creekside Trail má zas asi 5 míľ po hline a štrku popri vode. Percival’s Island je taká rovinka, v tieni, tam si dáš tam-a-späť, hneď vedľa RiverWalk Trail. Rivermont Avenue ti zas ponúka postupné stúpanie, keď potrebuješ intervaly. Lynchburg Road Runners Club tu fičí už vyše 50 rokov a má 474 členov. Moore & Giles Virginia 10 Miler je taká hlavná udalosť v septembri, ale v kalendári máme aj Memorial Day 10K a Percival's Island Firecracker 5 Mile Race.
Miestni si tu bicyklujú od ľahkých Z2 trás až po poriadne Hill City nohy. Typická trasa má 3 km a 25 m prevýšenia. Mesto má v ponuke 20 cyklotrás, ktoré dokopy majú 2 181 km. 4 km. Candlers Mountain, Liberty Mountain, Valley View Rd a Creekside Dr, tam nájdeš tie správne kopce, šotolinu a singletrack. Nemáme tu žiadny špecializovaný cyklistický klub, takže jazdci sa spoliehajú na trasy, zvyky v skupine a na to, čo im nohy dovolia v deň pretekov.
September je top mesiac, lebo už cítiť tú energiu z Virginia 10 Miler a vzduch začína zas pomáhať. 4°C. Keď je 2°C a viac, miestni vybiehajú skoro, držia poctivú Z2 a hľadajú si tieňové kilometre popri potoku. Zima tu má priemerne 1°C a napadne tak 18 inches snehu za sezónu. Traily sa vedia meniť z týždňa na týždeň, a cestári si väčšinou vymenia dlhé kopce za lepšie počasie, kratšie okruhy a stabilnú prácu.
