The Great North 5k for Children's Cancer North is a flat 5k charity run on Newcastle Quayside, held in September as part of the Great Runs series. It is a short, approachable race, suitable for runners aged 14 and over. Funds raised go to Children's Cancer North, supporting early phase clinical trials for children and young people with cancer.
The route starts and finishes on the Quayside, taking runners around the Newcastle and Gateshead waterfront. Finishers receive a medal and an event t-shirt. Those running for charity also get a Children's Cancer North t-shirt and sponsor forms in their pack. The cause is significant: less than 3% of UK cancer research funding is allocated to childhood cancer. The charity highlights families like Rebecca's, whose mother stated clinical trials saved her daughter's life three times.
