City2Surf Sydney

City2Surf Sydney is a 14-kilometre road race and fun run from Sydney's centre to Bondi Beach, held annually on the second Sunday in August since the early 1970s. It begins at Hyde Park in the CBD and concludes on the sand-side end of Bondi, making its name literal: city streets first, surf at the end. Approximately 80,000 participants enter in a typical year, with elite wheelchair athletes and fast seeded runners starting before larger groups of runners, joggers, walkers, wheelchair users, and people with strollers. The front of the field is competitive, with Steve Moneghetti and Susie Power holding course records, but most participants treat it as a communal outing rather than a strict race against time. The course is entirely asphalt and is not as easy as the beach finish might imply. Its most recognized challenge is Heartbreak Hill, a two-kilometre ascent commencing around the sixth kilometre, and the route gains about 221 metres overall before descending toward Bondi. The event was established by staff at The Sun newspaper, drawing inspiration from San Francisco's Bay to Breakers; the inaugural edition had 1,576 starters, a modest number compared to today's field. Costumes are a feature of the day, charity fundraising generates millions of dollars annually, and the finish often becomes a Bondi ritual of meat pies, barbecues, and weary legs by the shore.

Sydney Marathon Tour |

St Leonards Park in North Sydney provides the staging area before the route heads for Sydney's notable landmarks. The Sydney Marathon Tour | 2026 is linked to the TCS Sydney Marathon, noted as the seventh event in the Abbott World Marathon Majors, giving it a bucket-list status for runners. The appeal is straightforward: run across the Sydney Harbour Bridge, pass the Opera House, and finish at the Opera House to "celebrate the achievement of a life time." Tour packages include guaranteed entry, travel, and accommodation, attracting many runners who have traveled a significant distance for one of the "world's most scenic marathons."

The Great North Walk Ultras

The Great North Walk Ultras is a trail running series in Sydney, New South Wales, offering races from short trail runs to full ultra distances. It takes place in late October with 10K, 30K, 50K, 80K, 100K, and 162.5K options, allowing runners to select anything from a challenging morning on the trails to a 100-mile-style outing. Even the shorter races present significant elevation: the 10K covers 9.6 km with 329 m of climbing, the 30K covers 29.2 km with 770 m, and the 50K is approximately 50 km with around 1,500 m of ascent. The course crosses wild paths around Sydney, featuring waterfalls and cliff trails that lend the race a more rugged character than a road ultra. The longer events include substantial climbing: the 80K has approximately 2,560 m of gain, the 100K has about 3,230 m, and the 162.5K has around 5,100 m. The 30K and 50K also serve as qualifiers for Six Foot Track, increasing their appeal to Australian trail runners. Past events attracted over 300 runners in both the 50K and 162.5K, and more than 200 in the 80K and 100K distances.

Sydney Training Notes
