The Trail de la Liez begins at the port on Lac de la Liez in Peigney, organized by Peigney Sports et Loisirs as a winter trail event. It serves as a local winter tradition for trail runners, attracting both seasoned competitors and newcomers to a course designed around the lake, distinct from road races.
The initial kilometers trace the canal before entering the narrow passage towards Fort Constance Chlore de Peigney. The route has been adjusted so both race distances now pass through the fort, addressing past instances where shorter-course participants missed this section; one distance includes approximately one kilometer inside the fort’s caponiers. Following the fort, participants descend towards the lake on a shared path, proceed past the La Liez Nautical Club towards the Montruchot stream, and utilize farmland passages provided by the Cordamble and Angoulevent farms. High water levels at Lac de la Liez have necessitated the use of drier alternative paths in sections where the usual stream-side trail might be submerged, and crews have also cleared fallen trees from the course.
