The Tsumagoi Highland Cabbage Marathon starts and finishes at the Tokai University Tsumagoi Highland Training Center multipurpose ground in Tsumagoi Village, Gunma. This summer road race crosses one of Japan's primary cabbage-growing regions. Organizers describe it as Japan's most challenging road race because of its route featuring significant climbs and descents, deviating from a flat, fast profile. Entry is limited to 3,000 participants on a first-come basis, and the race proceeds regardless of weather conditions.
The course winds through extensive cabbage fields, the village's defining visual feature and the inspiration for the event's strong cabbage theme. All finishers receive fresh Tsumagoi Highland cabbage, sourced from a region that leads Japan in summer and autumn cabbage output, alongside unique race merchandise. A notable division is the married-couple run, linked to Tsumagoi's reputation as a destination for devoted husbands; participating couples are given a local marriage-harmony charm and must finish holding hands. Spectators can park at the former Baraki Ski Resort and Palcall Tsumagoi Resort, with complimentary shuttle buses scheduled to connect with JR rail services.
