Race Four is part of the Nelson Mountain Bike Club cyclocross series, a local CX program focused on fun, friendly racing and introducing new riders to a cyclocross course. Participants race against the clock for 45 minutes in the main cyclocross event, with the winner determined by the most laps completed. The day also features a children's race for those under 10 on shorter, simpler laps, and a 35-minute Short Track XC race open to any type of bicycle.
The racing format is lap-based on varied terrain, incorporating trails, roads, paddocks, fences, trees, horse jumps, steps, and other obstacles. Riders must carry their bikes over or through course elements, a fundamental aspect of CX. The Nelson cycling community balances competition with a lighthearted spirit; costumes are frequently seen, children's races are a regular occurrence, and senior racers receive a Belgian biscuit upon finishing and returning their number plate. Online registration closes at midnight prior to race day, with sign-on and briefing commencing at 9am. Payment is accepted in cash on the day.
