The Highland Charity Backyard Ultra begins and ends at the Slottsruinens parking lot in Sävsjö, Sweden. All participants start together at 09:00, with subsequent laps beginning every hour on the hour. This backyard-style race is organized by Höglandskyrkan in Sävsjö and Highland Trail Club. Any surplus from entry fees is distributed to charitable causes, and sponsoring companies contribute funds based on the total laps completed. Runners have one hour to finish each lap; failing to meet the cutoff or opting out of the next hour's start concludes their participation.
The unique aspect is the ability for runners to select their distance before each hourly start. The simpler choice is a 3.7 km circuit around the lake, incorporating gravel road, trail, and asphalt. The more challenging 6.7 km Bäckaskogsrundan route utilizes gravel roads and forest trails, featuring technical sections and ascents. The race concludes at 24:00, after a maximum of 15 laps. This results in over 55 km for the short course or more than 100 km for the long course. All are welcome to participate, with food provided throughout the day and coffee and a bun included. The last runner to finish a lap is declared the winner; however, if multiple runners complete lap 15, the first to cross the finish line is victorious.
