About this race
Sylvester VTT De Haan is a late-December mountain bike tour held at Sportcentrum Haneveld in De Haan, on the Belgian coast. It is listed on the Vlaamse Wielrijdersbond calendar and organized by WTC De Zeevogels. Riders can select shorter family-friendly routes or longer off-road courses, with distances of 15 km, 25 km, and 45 km, and a free kids' tour offered on certain editions. Starts are staggered throughout the morning and early afternoon, functioning as a ride-at-your-own-pace MTB event rather than a single mass-start race.
The route utilizes coastal terrain: dunes, dune forest, beach, and hard-packed sections between Wenduine, De Haan, Bredene, and Ostend. The longer ride is divided into two main segments, with turns near Blankenberge harbor and the Halve Maan, beach riding near the Oesterput and Naaktstrand, a challenging dune passage on the Schelpenpad, and sections through the Duinbossen and Palsteenbos. Aid stations are available for the 25 km and 45 km routes, and Haneveld offers showers, changing rooms, bike wash facilities, guarded bike parking, and bike rental. Post-ride, participants can clean up and gather in the Zeevogelcafé, contributing to the event's local club atmosphere over a commercial one.
