About this race
Pirin Ultra is a mountain trail race weekend held in Bansko, Bulgaria, situated at the base of the Pirin Mountains. Taking place in early September, it offers participants several distance options: a 160 km ultra, a 68 km ultra, the Pirin Extreme 38K, the Pirin Trail 25K, and a 2 km race.
The 160 km route presents a significant challenge with approximately 11,000 metres of elevation gain. The 68 km race includes 4,400 metres of climbing, and the 38 km course features about 3,300 metres of ascent. The event focuses on steep alpine terrain, not road running. The 25 km race, with its 1,000 metres of climb, serves as the most approachable trail option and attracts larger numbers of participants compared to the full ultra. Finishing rates highlight the differences between distances: the 160 km race had fewer starters and a considerably lower completion rate, whereas nearly all participants in the 25 km race finished. The races are eligible for UTMB Index points, attracting mountain runners seeking a demanding Bulgarian course that contributes to their international standing.
