Niagara Falls 10k, Half & Marathon

The Niagara Falls 10k, Half & Marathon is an October road-race series in Niagara Falls, Canada. The marathon, first run in 1974 and later joined by shorter race options, was formerly called the Niagara Falls International Marathon. The event now stays entirely on the Canadian side, though it once asked marathoners to bring a passport to the start, as the old route ran from Buffalo, New York, to Niagara Falls, Ontario. The current marathon starts and finishes at Rapidsview Park. Runners follow the Niagara Parkway toward Niagara Falls, turn near Fallsview Casino, continue along the parkway into Chippawa, and then head back to Rapidsview Park. Jesse Kregal founded the original race as the Skylon International Marathon. Its history includes several name changes, a ten-year break, and one edition where runners were led off course. Peter Pfitzinger holds the men’s course record at 2:17:10, and Nicole Stevenson holds the women’s record at 2:37:09.

The Don McMaster Memorial 12 Mile Creek Trail Half Marathon & 7k

The Don McMaster Memorial 12 Mile Creek Trail Half Marathon & 7k begins at 2 Lockhart Drive in St. Catharines, Ontario, at 9:00 AM EDT. This established trail event, now in its 38th year, offers a 21.1 km half marathon, a walking division on the same course, and a 7 km race for those seeking a challenging trail section. Field sizes are limited to 175 for the half marathon and 100 for the 7 km; both distances have sold out rapidly in past years. The half marathon route winds through the historic first Welland Canal area and the 12 Mile Creek Trail. Participants begin on the Merritt Trail towards downtown St. Catharines, loop back towards the trails behind Brock University, ascend Hydro Hill on the Niagara Escarpment, and then descend to the finish. The 7 km race utilizes the latter portion of the half marathon course, including Hydro Hill, making it a short but demanding option. Walkers complete the entire half marathon course, starting 90 minutes prior to the runners. The event benefits the Niagara Rankin Cancer Run, having previously attracted 268 participants and raised funds for the charity.

Niagara Ultra

Niagara Ultra begins in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, directing runners onto an asphalt path alongside the Niagara River, free from traffic. The race offers distances from 10 km to 80 km, including 50 km, marathon, and half marathon options, accommodating first-time distance runners, marathoners, and ultrarunners. It takes place in June, organized by the St. Catharines Roadrunners and Walkers. Most distances follow an out-and-back course on the Niagara River Recreation Trail and Niagara River Parkway, passing Fort George and proceeding towards Niagara Falls before returning. The 80 km, 50 km, and marathon courses run from Niagara-on-the-Lake to the Falls and back. The half marathon turns around at Queenston, and the 10 km route remains within Niagara-on-the-Lake. Walkers may participate in all distances except the 80 km, provided they meet the time limit and adhere to competitive walking rules. Now in its 32nd year, the event is part of the Ontario Ultra & Trail Race Series, provides fundraising for MADD Toronto, and includes a 10 km clinic with group training, race preparation instruction, and entry into the 10 km race.

About cycling & running in St. Catharines

St. Catharines-Niagara Training Notes

Running: Locals run Merritt Trail, Terry Fox Trail, Waterfront Trail, Seaway Haulage Road, George Nicholson Trail, Walker's Creek Trail, and The Twelve Trail East when they want steady base miles without overthinking it. The trail covers 6 miles of gravel and paved sections, and the north section stays popular with pedestrians. St. Catharines Roadrunners and Walkers meet Wednesday at 6:30pm at Cat's Caboose, then roll into Saturday coffee runs and Sunday morning trail runs at 9am. The Don McMaster Memorial 12 Mile Creek Trail Half Marathon & 7k, Run for the Grapes Half Marathon & 5K, and Welland Run 10K work as anchor events.

Cycling: Locals ride the canal trail, Merritt trail, waterfront trail, Walkers Creek, Grantham rail trail, Welland Canal, and Lakeshore when they want Z2, intervals, or a longer gran fondo day. Welland Canal is the clean bet for a decent ride, and the path takes about 30-45 minutes one way on a road bike. St. Catharines Cycling Club brings the fast crowd with Tuesday fast training, Time Trials, Saturday training rides, Sunday training rides, and a Wednesday Women's Group. Amici per la Vita also pulls Niagara riders together. The 3 km paved loop from St. Catharines carries 346 m of gain, so the climbs are rolling, not mountain stuff. Catharines has 346 m of elevation gain, so the climbs are rolling rather than steep.

Season: Summer gives the clearest calendar pulse, with the Canaqua Sports Mid-Summer Classic - Welland on August 2, 2026 and the Welland Canal Open Water Swim on August 30, 2026. Locals keep the canal, Waterfront Trail, and stone dust trail options in the rotation when legs need volume and the day is built for base miles. Winter changes the feel more than the map, because paved sections, gravel stone dust trail, and club meetups matter more when conditions tighten up. Runners still use the short loops and trail runs, and cyclists keep the Z2 honest when the road bike days get selective.
