About cycling & running in Belleville

Belleville-Quinte West Training Notes

Running: Locals keep running simple here. The waterfront trail is the default, and I always liked running the waterfront trail when Z2 feels better beside the Bay of Quinte. West Zwicks Trail works for easy laps near Zwick’s Park, and Mary Anne Sills Field has the track when intervals need clean splits. Potter’s Creek gives you that foresty dirt trail feel, while Hannah Park in Trenton has varied terrain and multiple trails. The Quinte West Library Running Club meets Tuesdays from January 13 to April 14, excluding March 17, from 5:30pm to 6:30pm. Spring Thaw, The County Marathon, Fat Ass Trail Run, and Wellington Women’s Half are the anchor races.

Cycling: Local riders get a lot of range without leaving Belleville-Quinte West. The city ride in Belleville stays mostly flat, paved, and accessible, and riders can finish it in under an hour along the Bay of Quinte and Moira River. The Bayshore Trail and Riverfront trail are good base miles, while Up the Trent, Over the Oaks mixes classic Ontario rail trail riding with paved country roads. The route runs 9 km and gains 375 meters, with 94% paved surface. Ridge 2 Ridge crests Moira Road north of Belleville, and Sagers Corners Road adds the hillier work. Prince Edward County Gran Fondo is the anchor event.

Season: Autumn is the best training block here. The air gets crisp, the hills turn patchwork, and Ridge 2 Ridge starts to feel worth the climb north of Belleville. Summer keeps runners on waterfront paths, the Fitness trail, and shaded dirt like Potter’s Creek, while riders use Batawa Ski Hill for free public mountain biking trails during the warmer months. There's 5 km of gravel on the south side of 8 Wing CFB Trenton. Winter pulls both sports tighter, and the Quinte West Library Running Club keeps Tuesdays moving from January 13 to April 14, excluding March 17.
