About this race

Deutschlandlauf is a 21-stage ultrarunning race across Germany, covering approximately 1,284 to 1,300 kilometers from the far north toward the south. One route begins in Flensburg and concludes in Lörrach. Another edition is noted to start on Sylt and finish at Zugspitze, Germany’s highest mountain. It takes place in late summer, with daily starts at 7:00 AM. Stages average about 61 kilometers, positioning it more as a long expedition on foot than a typical road race. The course progresses daily through Germany. Early stages include Flensburg to Kappeln, Kappeln to Kiel-Holtenau, Kiel-Holtenau to Bad Segeberg, and Bad Segeberg to Trittau. Runners are classified by gender, with no age-group categories, and results are logged in hours and minutes. The time limit equates to roughly 5 kilometers per hour, though organizers reportedly interpret this limit leniently. The event maintains a practical, small-race atmosphere: accommodation is arranged before the start and after the finish, an opening dinner is provided, and runners have the option to register for individual stages on the morning of their start.
