About this race
The Höllwand-Marathon starts in Gumpelstadt/Moorgrund, Germany, sending runners into the Thuringian Forest each September. This trail race series offers 10 km, 21 km, and 42 km distances. The 10 km is a Quarter Marathon, the 21 km a Half Marathon, and the 42 km the Marathon. The full marathon includes approximately 1,300 meters of elevation gain, making it a forest and hills race, not a flat road event. Entry fees are modest, from about 10 to 13 euros for the 10 km, 19 to 21 euros for the half marathon, and 24 to 29 euros for the marathon.
The course is a loop on quiet, shaded forest paths, crossing the Rennsteig, Thuringia's renowned ridge trail, multiple times. Marathon runners ascend via Schindrasen near Walfisch, descend into the Mosbacher Hölle gorge, pass the Mosbacher Waldbad, and then face a continuous climb of nearly 11 km toward the Felsenmeer am Glöckner, reaching about 700 meters elevation. The race is named after the Großer Drachenstein rock formation, visible from the course, and the Silbergrund section offers a broad view from Alte Warth. This event, now in its twenty-first edition, attracts trail runners seeking a challenging, wooded mountain course over a city marathon.
