Gran Fondo Nove Colli

Gran Fondo del Vulture begins in Piazza XX Settembre in Rionero, sending amateur road cyclists into the Vulture-Melfese area of Basilicata, southern Italy. This annual gran fondo draws mostly cycle tourists and amateur riders, not a professional peloton. Riders require affiliation with the Italian Cycling Federation or another body under the National Cycling Council, lending the event a club-cycling atmosphere. The race, which started in June, has run for over twenty editions, typically attracting several hundred riders and once exceeding 900 entries. The route varies annually but includes towns around Vulture-Melfese such as Atella, Barile, Rapolla, Melfi, Ripacandida, Venosa, Lavello, Filiano, Ruvo del Monte, and San Fele. The local amateur cycling union Il Velocifero of Rionero organizes it, also running other regional cycling events like I Castelli Federiciani, MTBVulture, and the cyclocross Trofeo MTB Sette Colli. The field is predominantly Italian, with a small contingent of foreign riders, and professional cyclist Domenico Pozzovivo has attended as a special guest in some editions.

Gran Fondo Marco Pantani

The Gran Fondo Marco Pantani is an annual amateur road cycling event in Italy, held in honor of Marco Pantani, the Italian climber nicknamed Il Pirata. It is open to everyday cycling enthusiasts, with chip timing for riders who want a measured effort and categories that include E-bikes and Under 18 participants. The routes use roads connected to Pantani’s own career, so the ride is tied to his racing story rather than just his name. Riders receive refreshment points on course, a guarded bike deposit, changing rooms, showers, a race pack, event photos, side events, and a pasta party after the finish; the event is also associated with Cesenatico FC.

About cycling & running in Cesena

Cesena Training Notes

Running: Locals run from the city centre into the often bumpy outskirts, and that gives easy Z2 without needing a set route. Cesena feels like a place where the city is full of active people now, with organized walking and running groups showing up more than before. Parco delle Rimembranze gives a green lap near the Malatesta Fortress on Garampo hill. FIDAL - Federazione Italiana Di Atletica Leggera anchors the track side. Notturna di San Giovanni Cesena, 16° Strawoman – We Run the World – Cesena, Flowers Runner, Strapazeda, Barroccia, and Nove Colli Running keep the race calendar moving.

Cycling: Locals ride road and woods, and Cesena makes that easy because the Apennine Mountains sit close enough for real climbing. The route runs 9 km and gains 329 m while it follows the river Savio. The route passes Parco delle Rimembranze and takes a 2-kilometre climb to San Demetrio. Barbotto brings the wall from The Nove Colli race. Grand Tour of the Savio Valley, Montiano e Longiano, Foce del Rubicone, Le Pinete, and MTB trail from San Piero in Bagno cover base miles, singletrack, and long gran fondo prep. Gran Fondo 9 Colli and Gran Fondo Marco Pantani are the anchor events.

Season: Spring puts runners and riders on the plains and coastal areas without much fuss. Autumn gives the same steady window for intervals, Z2, and longer weekend rides. Summer pushes cyclists toward the Tuscan-Romagna Apennines because those areas ride cooler. The Apennine Mountains also make sense for runners who want shade, hills, and less heat in the legs. Winter stays workable because Romagna averages 19°C through the year. Romagna has only 92 rainy days a year, so locals still stack base miles, cyclocross days, and steady runs when the calendar gets quiet.
