Gran Fondo Chianti Classic

Gran Fondo Chianti Classic is a race series based in Greve in Chianti, a town in Tuscany’s province of Florence. The start and finish are both in Greve, which sits at 236 meters above sea level in the Chianti area. The available source does not give the race distance, surface, climbing total, participant numbers, or founding date. What it does make clear is the setting: a start-finish event centered on Greve in Chianti rather than a point-to-point route between separate towns.

About cycling & running in Florence

Firenze Training Notes

Running: locals run the Arno first, then add hills when the legs ask for it. Cascine Park gives easy base miles west of the city centre. The loop runs 87 km with 33 m of gain, so it suits steady Z2. The route covers 81 km with 104 m of gain and keeps you moving through town. Piazzale Michelangelo turns a normal jog into intervals fast. The city centre works best early. 195 km. Notturna di San Giovanni, 12° Rignano Run, and 14° Corsa dei Tre Parchi keep locals sharp.

Cycling: locals ride out of Firenze in every direction, but the real climbing starts fast. ASD VeloClub Florence By Bike gives more leisurely outings on Saturdays and competitive activities on Sundays. ASD Mugello Toscana Bike, Toscana CRIT, Rouleur Cycling Team, Toscana Factory Team, and Badia Cycling Club keep the group-ride scene alive. Giro di Fiesole heads north to Fiesole, only 10 km from Florence. Via San Domenico winds through Fiesole with proper world-champs energy. Via San Domenico is 3 km with 1,035 m elevation. Chianti gives vineyard climbs, Greve, Panzano, and gran fondo legs. Strade Bianche, L’Eroica vintage bike race, and Chianti Classico Gran Fondo sit on the calendar.

Season: spring and fall are the cleanest training blocks for both sports. April to October gives the biggest window, with long mornings for Z2 and late light for a post-work spin. Summer pushes locals uphill and into shade. Vallombrosa Forest sits 15 degrees cooler than Florence, so runners and riders use it when the city feels hot. Consuma and Vallombrosa bring climbing, with the first climb through Pomino to Borselli reaching 900 meters before Consuma Pass and the backside of Vallombrosa. Winter turns cool and damp. Snow stays rare, and November can bring mid 40s Fahrenheit with very little wind.
