About cycling & running in PiacenzaPiacenza Training Notes
Running: Locals keep running simple in Piacenza. The 9.75 km anchor route starts in Piazza della Cittadella and finishes in Piazza de' Cavalli. Runners use the shorter mapped stuff for steady work, from Piacenza 1 to the UISP Marcia dei 4 Ponti route. The UISP Marcia dei 4 Ponti route gives you 34 km with 60 m of gain when you want controlled volume. The Val Luretta Trail brings the proper trail day, with up to 1100 m of elevation gain. The calendar also has Caminada de Casal, Marcia delle Prugne, Camminata delle Tre Valli, 4 Piazze Running, Strawoman, Carpinus Trail, and Trofeo Annicchetta.
Cycling: Locals ride north when they want flat base miles. The cycleway along the Po River is just outside the city, and the 66 km loop starts and ends in Piacenza while following the Po Cycleway on the Lombardy and Emilia-Romagna side. Riders go south for the real work. The Nure river ride gives 56 km from Piacenza, and the road hits 6-7% between Bettola and Farini. The big day links Val Nure and Val Trebbia over more than 130 km. Passo del Mercatello starts biting after Ferriere, and the descent to Marsaglia runs for 17 km. PolimiRide works as the cycling anchor event.
Season: Spring gives Piacenza its best easy rhythm. The Po side has agricultural land, old brick farmhouses and lots of wildflowers in spring, so Z2 rides and relaxed runs feel natural. Summer changes the clock. Locals go early because summers are hot and sultry, and intervals feel cleaner before the day gets heavy. Autumn keeps the Trebbia and Nure roads useful for gran fondo prep, with gentle climbs and descents that make a really fun ride. Winter pulls runners back toward flatter city routes and steady half-marathon work. Cyclists stay north for base miles more often, then save the southern climbs for clearer days.
