Granfondo Squali is a road cycling event held in May in Cattolica, located on Italy’s Adriatic coast in Emilia-Romagna. The main Granfondo route covers 128 km with 2,020 meters of elevation gain. The Mediofondo offers a shorter 85 km route with 1,393 meters of elevation. The weekend also features gravel cycling options and a running race, functioning as a multi-day sports festival rather than a single race. The road rides conclude at Gabicce Monte, with the final section ascending from the coast. A 46 km Squali 46 ride, featuring 712 meters of climbing, is also available. This ride is untimed, welcomes all bicycle types, and serves as a tribute to motorcycle legend Valentino Rossi. Gravel cyclists can choose between 45 km and 80 km routes. The event is organized by Velo Club Cattolica ASD.
Running: The beachfront path runs 75 km flat, simple, and always there for Z2. Runners use the sand too, and the compact strip near the sea keeps it honest without turning every stride into a slog. The beach loop is 7 km, and Alcide Cervi Park keeps short reps tight on 550 meters. Rimini Marathon anchors April with a flat 42 km 195 meter course, and Rimini-Verucchio gives locals another sharp target.
Cycling: Locals ride the city paths for easy spins, then point the bike inland when the legs want work. The easy MTB and e-bike loops run about 7 km. The hard road rides run about 6 km. 8 km. La Gialla, Gran Fondo degli Squali, Ride Riccione, Nove Colli, and Granfondo MTB Il Carpegna mi basta keep the calendar loud.
Season: Spring gives Rimini the best base miles, and autumn gives the same calm after the beach season drops back. Summer brings high humidity, with June and July holding an average minimum of 72%, so locals run early, ride early, and keep water close. Thunderstorms can turn a long ride into a shorter one, but the flat promenade and park loops still work for steady sessions. Winter stays mild for Emilia-Romagna, and November and December reach an average maximum humidity of 84%, so runners keep the city loops and cyclists add gloves, a rainproof jacket, and Z2 patience.
