Fukuoka Marathon

The Fukuoka Marathon is an international men's road race held annually in early December in Fukuoka, Japan, with roots tracing back to 1947. Originally named the Kanaguri Prize Asahi Marathon and first held in Kumamoto, the event found its permanent home in Fukuoka starting in 1959. The current race upholds the legacy of the Fukuoka International Marathon, which, despite a temporary halt after its 75th running, was continued by a successor event that preserved its course and history. The marathon has consistently drawn elite marathoners, not just local participants. International athletes were first welcomed in 1954, and the course has since witnessed a world record. Tsegaye Kebede holds the course record at 2:05:18, and Toshihiko Seko and Frank Shorter are tied for the most wins with four each. A notable local marker is found at Hakata Station: a Fukuoka Marathon monument displays the footprints of previous champions.

About cycling & running in Fukuoka

Fukuoka Training Notes

Running: Locals run Ohori Park when they want easy laps, because the pond course gives you 2 kilometers without thinking. Maizuru Park adds the Heiwadai Track-and-Field course, and Sanno Park works for short intervals on its 500-meter and 1-kilometer loops. The Muromi River trail runs 7 km one way, and it feels wide and less crowded on weekends. Hakata runners still look for small groups once or twice a week, and Muromi River has a parkrun nearby. Fukuoka Marathon is the anchor event, starting in Tenjin and finishing in Itoshima.

Cycling: Locals ride west when they want base miles by the water. The Itoshima coastal loop gives serious cyclists an 80km circuit, and the Fukuoka-Itoshima Route stretches about 83 km with about 253 m of gain. Shikanoshima stays flat and easy for Z2, while the Genkai Coast to Matsuura route winds out through Saga toward Nagasaki Prefecture. The climbs sit south, east, and west of town. Buzen-Toho makes a proper gran fondo day with about 1,599 m over 61 km. Kitakyushu Cycling Day is the anchor event.

Season: April and June see plenty of bikes out, and autumn is the cleaner choice for long runs, steady rides, and dry climbing days. Summer starts getting muggy from June onward, even around 5 or 6 in the morning, and locals keep bottles full because some stretches have no kombini or supermarket in sight. The coast makes Fukuoka feel milder than the bigger inland urban heat, especially near Hakata Bay and the Genkai Sea. Winter stays relatively mild, snow cover is rarely seen, and runners keep the park loops while cyclists pick quieter coastal roads or lower inland routes.
