Crater Rim Ultra

The longest Crater Rim Ultra race starts with a crossing of Lyttelton Harbour, then runners ascend the Port Hills above Christchurch, New Zealand. This October trail-running event offers distances from the 53 km ultra down to 30 km, 22 km, 12 km, and 6 km routes, plus 1 km and 2 km Hansen Park Dash options for younger participants. This is its 25th edition and it is supported by La Sportiva. The 53 km route traces the Crater Rim above the harbour. The Bellbird Buster 30 km begins near the harbour's head and leads runners through native bush and coastal terrain on the peninsula. The Kiwi Challenge is a 22 km climb to the Sign of the Kiwi with 775 metres of elevation gain. The Rapaki Rumble ascends Mount Vernon Farm Track to Summit Road, and the Valley View follows a compact valley course for its shortest main race. Recent Kiwi Challenge results indicate a predominantly New Zealand field with some international runners, and that distance has attracted over 250 finishers.

About cycling & running in Christchurch

Christchurch Training Notes

Running: Hagley Park is the easy local default when you want Z2 without leaving town. The park has 75km of track, and South Hagley keeps the loops simple. The Ōtākaro Avon River Trail runs 12km one way through the city toward New Brighton Beach. 8 to 11km. Christchurch Run Club meets Tuesdays at 6pm and Saturdays at 8am at the clubroom. You can get 5 hours in the hills if you head out of town. Christchurch Marathon, City 2 Surf, Run Akaroa, and Crater Rim Ultra are the anchor events.

Cycling: Hagley Park urban greenways and bike paths are the soft launch for base miles. The Avon River Trail and Christchurch Coastal Pathway keep the riding flat and tidy when the legs need a spin. The Summit Road climb hits 729m of elevation gain in just 1km. Banks Peninsula turns into proper gran fondo country, and Bossu Road from Little River is the long grind. The Bossu Road loop runs 5km. Spokes Canterbury points riders toward Revolve, Wednesday Wheelies, Christchurch Road Cycling, Canterbury Gravelleurs, Christchurch Single Track Chicks, and Singletrack Club.

Season: April and October are the big cycling months, and summer is warm enough for long Z2 rides, intervals, and evening loops. Summer temps sit around 22°C, and the north-east sea breeze often keeps the edge off. The nor'wester can still make a ride or run feel honest. Hagley Park, the Ōtākaro Avon River Trail, and the Coastal Pathway stay useful all summer. Winter drops temps to around 3°C and shifts the mood toward layers, forest tracks, and steadier efforts. McLeans Forest Run - Winter Edition and Krayzie Midwinter Backyard Ultra fit that colder block.
