About this race
The Lord of the Chain Rings 400/600 BRM begins at the Matamata Information Centre at 6am, with rider check-in at 5:45am. This Audax-style long-distance cycling event offers two distances: the 400km Fellowship of the Chain Ring, with a 27-hour time limit, and the 600km Lord of the Chain Ring, with a 40-hour limit. Riders must have two working front lights, two working rear lights, and a hi-vis gilet, indicating this event is designed for serious overnight riding.
The 400km route travels from Matamata through Te Aroha, Huntly, Te Kauwhata, Ngaruawahia, and Paeroa before returning to Matamata. Photo controls are located at sites such as Rangiriri Pa, Turangawaewae House, the Te Awa River Ride Bridge, and the L&P Bottle. The 600km route extends the ride over two days, incorporating Morrinsville, Rangiriri, Ngatea, Kaiaua, and Te Aroha before the return to Matamata. While the event incorporates a Tolkien theme, practical considerations are key, with planned late-night food and water stops including Tahuna Tavern (approx. 285-290km) and Paeroa McDonalds (on the 400km course).
