About this race
The Lord of the Chain Ring 600 km BRM begins at Matamata Information Centre at 6am. Riders should be present for inspection and briefing at 5:45am. This is an Audax-style long-distance cycling brevet offering two options: a 400 km ride with a 27-hour time limit and a 600 km ride with a 40-hour time limit. Participants must carry two functioning front lights, two functioning rear lights, and a hi-vis gilet, necessary for riding through the night.
The 400 km route includes stops in Matamata, Te Aroha, Huntly, Te Kauwhata, Ngaruawahia, Paeroa, and returns to Matamata. Photo controls are located at Rangiriri Pa, Turangawaewae House, Te Awa River Ride Bridge, and the L&P Bottle in Paeroa. The 600 km route follows Matamata, Morrinsville, Rangiriri, Ngaruawahia, Ngatea, Kaiaua, Te Aroha, and back to Matamata, with points of interest including Te Whero Redoubt, Rangiriri Pa, and Turangawaewae House. The event incorporates a Lord of the Rings theme, referring to riders as hobbits and cautioning them about navigation. Practical information includes that Paeroa McDonald’s closes at 10pm, and Tahuna Tavern, near the 290 km mark, is open until 1am.
