About cycling & running in AbileneAbilene Training Notes
Running: Locals keep running simple in Abilene. ACU Campus works for steady laps and early base miles. Cedar Creek waterway gives runners another easy line through town. Cedar Creek loops run about 5 miles per lap. Lake Abilene gives longer, quieter miles when the city feels too tight. Abilene Running Company and Abilene Runners Club sit at 2654 Industrial Blvd. Abilene Runners Club meetings usually happen the 2nd Tuesday at 6:00 PM. Run for Brilee and Don't Run with Scissors Color Fun Run 5K are the local anchor names.
Cycling: Riders get a lot of choice for a town this size. Abilene has 173 cycle routes, and those routes total 2,255 km. Steamboat Cycling Club handles the road side with weekly group rides around Abilene and the surrounding area. Abilene Bicycle Club builds and maintains Buck Creek Trail System, so local singletrack runs through that crew. Buck Creek Trail gives riders 13+ miles and just over 500+ feet of elevation gain in a full lap. Novice Loop at Buck Creek Trail gives an easy 3+ miles of quick and twisties. Steamboat mountain on County Road 650 brings grades up to 20%. 2026 Tour de Gap is the anchor ride.
Season: May and July are the months when most people get on their bikes here. Summer keeps both sports honest, so locals pick clean loops, stack Z2, and use Red Bud Park, ACU Campus, Buck Creek Trail System, and the 2026 Tour de Gap 50K Route with purpose. Lake Abilene and Cedar Creek waterway still work for runners who want calmer miles. Buck Creek Trails stay sharper for helmets, singletrack, and monthly time trials. Winter lands inside Abilene's humid subtropical climate. Runners and riders usually keep the routine going, with more steady base miles and fewer big claims about speed.
