27th Annual Cape Cod Against the Tide

Cape Cod Against the Tide is a family-friendly multi-sport fundraiser held at Cliff Pond in Nickerson State Park, Brewster, Massachusetts. The event begins with swim races, followed by certified 5K and 10K runs, and includes a 3-mile fitness walk for those preferring a non-competitive option. Swimmers can select a USMS-sanctioned 1-mile swim, competitive or recreational 1-mile swims, or a half-mile recreational swim; wetsuits are permitted. The event supports the Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition, which works to prevent breast cancer associated with environmental factors. Funds raised will go toward MBCC programs, including Let’s Talk Prevention: Reducing Toxic Exposures, its webinar series, and a student environmental health program named Let’s Talk Prevention: Actions You Can Take. Participants may register individually or as part of a team. Bibs are distributed on the morning of the event, and beach regulations prohibit pets on the sand, with the exception of service animals.

Second Summer Cycle

Second Summer Cycle is a charity bike ride on Cape Cod starting and finishing at Smugglers Beach in South Yarmouth. Participants select from four distances: 15, 34, 60, or 100 miles, with staggered starts from morning. This event operates as a non-profit fundraiser for several Cape Cod nonprofits; the day focuses on participation, not competitive placement. The routes traverse eight historic Cape Cod towns, with each distance concluding at the Mid Cape finish area. Course support features marshals at key turns, motorcycle patrols, mechanical assistance from bike shops, SAG vehicles, hydration and food stations, and medical support. Post-ride, participants, volunteers, families, and friends convene at the finish for local beer, food trucks, and live music.

SwimRun Cape Cod

SwimRun Cape Cod is an October swim-run race held within the Cape Cod National Seashore. It is Southern New England's sole event of its type. Participants alternate between running and open-water swimming, deviating from the standard single swim and single run leg format. The race provides various distances: a long course covering approximately 18 miles of running and up to 3 miles of swimming across 8 to 9 bodies of water; a medium course with about 12 miles of running and 2 miles of swimming; and shorter options for those seeking a less extensive version of the format. The course incorporates freshwater crossings within the National Seashore, requiring participants to transition between trails or roads and pond swims, rather than completing a single loop. Individuals can compete solo or as two-person teams, with teammates required to finish the entire course together. Run tethers are permitted but not mandatory. Swimmers use race-issued caps and must carry bright green safety buoys, with extra caps available near pond entrances. Mixed and single-sex teams are scored distinctly. The event is part of the My SwimRun Championship Series, offering a path to a world championship start for class winners or point scorers.

The Cape’s relatively temperate shoulder seasons extend bicycling opportunities further into mid-spring and late fall, and runners still get Route 6A, Barnstable Village, and Otis Atwood without much drama. Winter changes the rhythm for both sports, because Barnstable averages about 30 inches of seasonal snowfall and February lines up with the snowiest stretch.
