Running: Locals run Birmingham through parks, ridges, and pretty neighborhood connectors. The Lakeshore Trail offers 5 miles of flat paved surface. Homewood and Mountain Brook work well for road miles, especially the Lakeshore Trail, Mountain Brook, and Homewood combo that can stretch past 15 miles. Red Mountain Park gives trail runners 15 miles of dirt, and Moss Rock Preserve adds 12 miles. Birmingham Track Club anchors Saturdays at The Trak Shak Homewood, and Alchemy Run Club takes downtown long runs around 9 to 13 miles. Run Magic City and Bridge Builder 5K are local races.
Cycling: Birmingham Bicycle Club sets the road rhythm here, with Tuesday rides from Botanical Gardens, Dog Bite, and Easy Road, plus monthly 3rd Saturday Road Rides. The BBC Spring Metric route runs 98 km and gains 920 m, so it is real base miles with teeth. The Birmingham Permanent route runs 103.3 km and climbs 994 m, and the Northeast Loop route packs 1,051 m into 83.6 km. Red Mountain, Shades Mountain, Sand Mountain, and Ruffner Mountain hold the climbing. RideBHM gives mountain bikers 20 downhill trails, 220 feet of vert, and some of the sickest downhill trails in the state. BBC 100 Dragon Century Challenge, Tour de Cahaba, and Ride of Silence are anchor events.
Season: Spring and fall are the best months because the weather feels usable, the humidity backs off, and both runners and riders can stack intervals without fighting the day. 7°C. The temperature hits 32°C on 65 days, so locals start early, keep Z2 honest, and take shade on tree-lined trails. 8°C. 5 cm, so group runs, road rides, cyclocross, and trail days keep going with layers.
