Valmont Short Track Series

The Valmont Short Track Series is a weekly mountain bike race night at Valmont Bike Park in Boulder, Colorado, held every Wednesday in May and June. It features short-track racing: riders complete multiple laps on a compact course, with most adult races lasting approximately 25 minutes. The course varies weekly but is typically about a 1-mile lap, with most races consisting of four or five laps. Registration is on race day at the venue, and no racing license is needed. The evening includes categories ranging from a free, non-competitive Kids Fun Race for ages 6-9 to junior, women’s, and men’s fields. Riders age 10 and older may race with adults, while younger children participate in the fun race. Chip timing is integrated into the number plate, which racers use each week. The event maintains a low-key atmosphere with cash or Venmo entry, limited parking, encouragement for arriving by bike, and no podiums or awards. A second race on the same day is complimentary, aligning with the series' grassroots character.

Boulder Rez Marathon

The Boulder Rez Marathon takes place in August at Boulder Reservoir in Boulder, Colorado. The race starts and finishes at the reservoir park area on 51st Street. This event is a trail-and-dirt-road race series, offering marathon, marathon relay, three-quarter marathon, half marathon, and 10K distances. The full marathon begins first in the early morning, with shorter races starting shortly after. The course remains open until early afternoon. Most of the route follows dirt roads, packed-dirt trails, some singletrack, and paved park roads near the start and finish, running beside or around Boulder Reservoir. The course is notably flat for Boulder, featuring approximately 200 feet of elevation gain. The primary challenge lies in maintaining a steady pace over mixed surfaces, rather than significant climbing. The race is USATF sanctioned, with measured and marked courses. Participants receive finisher medals and shirts, along with overall and age-group awards. Post-race activities include music, awards, beer, and food. Volunteers can be of any age, though those under 13 require adult supervision.

About cycling & running in Boulder

Boulder Base Miles

Running: Boulder gives runners more than 150 miles of trails, so locals rarely run the same week twice. Mesa Trail rolls from Chautauqua Park with Flatirons views, and the full out-and-back runs half-marathon distance with over 2,000 feet of vert. Mt. Sanitas climbs 1,300 feet in under a mile and a half, so the fitness has nowhere to hide. South Boulder Creek Trail and Bobolink Trail suit chill Z2 days. Boulder Track Club, Elevate Run Club, Fleet Feet Boulder, Avanti Run Club, and RISE Running keep the group calendar busy. Bolder BOULDER 10K, the 2026 Dash & Dine 5k Run Series, and Boulder Marathon give the city its anchor races.

Cycling: Boulder riders get road, gravel, singletrack, and base miles right out the door. Boulder Cycling Club runs Tuesday Night Rides from Twisted Pine Brewery at 5:30 PM and Thursday Night Rides from Upslope Brewery at 5:30 PM. The long version is 2 km with 500 m of elevation. The short version is 7 km with 275 m. The climb is 5 km with 3,112 m of gain. Wednesday Morning Velo and Valmont Short Track Series keep the race legs sharp.

Season: June through September is the cleanest block for longer runs, steady rides, and cool summer nights. Elevate Run Club has long runs every Saturday at 7 am in the summer months, and locals stack Z2, intervals, and trail days before the afternoon heat matters. Boulder Cycling Club weekly rides resume in March, so road and gravel season ramps before summer really lands. Winter stays pretty damn mild when you put it in perspective. Bike paths are regularly plowed clear, and people ride all winter on fat tire bikes with snow tires. Shady areas hold snow after sunny days, so locals watch the ice and keep moving.
