Air Force Marathon

The Air Force Marathon concludes at the National Museum of the United States Air Force, providing a setting directly linked to the service it honors. This event takes place annually on the third Saturday of September at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio, featuring a Boston-qualifying marathon as its centerpiece. The weekend's offerings extend to a half marathon, 10K, 5K, a Tailwind Trot 1K Kids’ Run, and a virtual race, accommodating serious marathoners, families, and those preferring shorter distances. The 10K and half marathon also include a RUCK division. The course winds through significant aviation landmarks, connecting participants with over 110 years of military airpower history before reaching the museum finish. Established in 1997 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the U.S. Air Force, the race draws a diverse crowd of civilians, teams, veterans, active duty service members, reservists, National Guard, ROTC, and retired military personnel. The AIM HIGH Challenge combines the 5K with a marathon, half marathon, or 10K, with finishers receiving shirts, medals, a finisher coin, and a challenge medal. The weekend also features a two-day Health & Fitness Expo, a pasta dinner, and a Finish Line Festival.

5k for Kelli

The 5k for Kelli is an annual 5K run/walk held at The Flying Field at Wegerzyn in Dayton, Ohio. The start and finish lines are located beside Wegerzyn Gardens. This event is presented by the Breast Wishes Foundation and honors Kelli James, along with breast cancer survivors, those currently battling the disease, and those who have been lost. All proceeds are directed toward granting wishes for women affected by breast cancer. The 3.1-mile course follows an out-and-back route alongside the Stillwater River. It is designed for both families and runners, offering awards for the top overall male and female finishers, as well as age-group prizes ranging from 19-and-under up to 60-plus. The fairy theme stems from Kelli’s fondness for fairies. Participants are encouraged to wear tutus, wings, and flower crowns. Fairy-themed items will be available for purchase, and free face painting and colored hair spraying will be offered at the race site.

ORRRC Possum Creek 5k Trail Race

The ORRRC Possum Creek 5K Trail Race is a low-key evening 5K held at Possum Creek Metropark in Dayton, Ohio. The race begins and ends at Sycamore Shelter, located on Frytown Road. It commences at 7 p.m. and serves as a suitable introduction to trail running. The course consists of dirt, gravel, meadow, and grass sections, featuring minimal elevation gain, no water crossings, and not requiring specialized trail footwear. The Ohio River Road Runners Club organizes this event as one of its smaller, volunteer-managed races. ORRRC members and children 14 and under participate without charge. Other participants are subject to a modest entry fee. While shirts and finisher medals are not provided, runners receive chip timing, post-race refreshments, and occasionally small awards for age groups. Parking is limited near the shelter, making carpooling advisable. The alternative lot at the pond necessitates an additional half-mile walk to the starting point.

About cycling & running in Dayton

Dayton Base Miles And Bike Paths

Running: Locals run the MetroParks, the bike paths, and the steady early loops through Oakwood and Kettering. Oakwood brings Hills and Dales, Ridgeway Road, and Calvary cemetery hill work when Z2 needs teeth. Germantown MetroPark's Orange Trail gives trail runners the hard option. Dayton Running Club meets Thursday for social miles, Tuesday for speed at Kettering Fairmont High School, and most weekends for bike path runs. 5 Rivers Running Club starts Saturday from Oakwood High School for 6-8 hilly miles. Dayton Track Club keeps the wider training scene moving. The anchor calendar has the 2026 Air Force Marathon, Dragons 5K, Warped Wing 5k River Run, and ORRRC Possum Creek 5k Trail Race.

Cycling: Locals ride the bike paths first, because Dayton has a huge dedicated system and path conditions are generally great. The Great Miami River Trail runs north and south for 93 miles, so base miles are easy to stack. The Connector runs 1 miles through Dayton, Kettering, and Oakwood, and it links the Iron Horse Trail, Great Miami River Trail, and Mad River Trail. The Connector gives a gentle climb into the south suburbs. The Connector climbs 436 m over 5 km. The Iron Horse Trail runs 9 km with 261 m of gain. Dayton Cycling Club, Major Taylor Cycling Club of Dayton, Team Dayton Cycling, and Colavita Ohio Cycling keep the group-ride lane open.

Season: The best months come when the paths are clear, the MetroParks are firm, and locals can move between road, gravel, and trail without overthinking kit. Summer keeps the biking scene pretty sick, with recreational road riding strong around Centerville, Beavercreek, and most of Kettering. Runners still favor Oakwood, Kettering, Beavercreek bike paths, and shaded park miles when workouts get hot. Winter changes the rhythm for both sports. Locals often run before the sun comes up between 4:15 and 6:00 AM on well-lit main-street sidewalks with a headlamp and reflective clothing. Cyclists lean harder on paved trails, commuting routes, and steady Z2 days when road rides get less simple.
