CAVEMAN CHALLENGE

The Caveman Challenge is a morning race and fitness event held at Whispering Pines Park in Inverness, Florida, with activities running from 8:00 to 11:00 AM EDT. The main Competitive Caveman Challenge involves athletes completing a 5K run, swimming 400 yards in a short-course pool, performing strength and plyometric exercises between swim laps, and finishing by pushing a Jeep 25 meters. Team and scaled-down options are available. In the Team Caveman Challenge, one participant runs the 5K while the other completes the swim and exercise segments, after which both can team up for the Jeep push. The Mini Caveman consists of a 5K run/walk combined with the Jeep push. This event benefits The Wil-Power Foundation, Inc., established to honor William Mintner, a swimmer with the YMCA Wahoo’s, Ocala Aquatics, and Florida Southern, who enjoyed CrossFit, swimming, running, and his neon green Jeep Wrangler. This marks the race's eighth year, and its "caveman" theme references the cult film Teenage Caveman, initially produced as Prehistoric World and later featured on Mystery Science Theater 3000.

Crystal River Triathlon

The Crystal River Triathlon begins at Fort Island Gulf Beach in Crystal River, Florida. The first wave starts Saturday morning at 7:30 a.m. The primary event is a sprint triathlon: a quarter-mile swim, a 12-mile bike ride, and a 3-mile run. This format suits athletes seeking a concise multisport competition over an extended race day. The series offers alternative race formats at the same location. Duathletes begin with a 1-mile run, followed by the 12-mile bike and 3-mile run. Aquabike competitors complete a quarter-mile swim, a 12-mile ride, and then proceed to the finish. The participant field is diverse, including age-group competition alongside categories for Athena, Clydesdale, Fat Tire, Military/LEO/PSO, Novice, Adaptive, and relay teams. Packet pickup is at the race site on Saturday morning; a USAT card and photo ID are necessary. All finishers receive a custom medal.

John Holmes Trail Run

The John Holmes Trail Run is a small Florida trail race at Croom Park in the Withlacoochee State Forest, offering 50K, 16-mile, and 9-mile distances. The 50K is noted as the oldest 50K trail run in the Southeast. The event is capped at 250 runners, fostering a close trail-community atmosphere rather than a large road-race production. The course utilizes the Croom trails. The shorter distances provide the same forest-race setting without requiring a full ultra commitment. Originally named the Croom Trail 50K, the race was renamed to honor founder John Holmes, a longtime figure in the Croom trail community. Participants receive race shirts and awards. The event highlights its post-race food and volunteer support as key aspects of the day.

About cycling & running in Homosassa Springs

Homosassa Springs Training Notes

Running: Locals run Homosassa Springs on Loop A, Loop C, and Loop D when they want quiet base miles close to home. Loop A, Loop C, and Loop D total 3 km with an Intermediate rating. Withlacoochee State Forest - Citrus Tract handles the trail days. Homosassa Springs has no named run club in the brief, so race day becomes the meetup. Crystal River Triathlon, Camp Spirit 5K, Sweat Swat n Swear, Hot August Night Trail Race, and Withlacoochee Forest Trail Marathon anchor the calendar.

Cycling: Homosassa riders keep it simple and steady. The route runs 2 km with 49 m of ascent and 47 m of descent. Locals use that for spins, intervals, or a short Z2 check when time is tight. The brief lists no named cycling club, so the named events carry the community feel. Crystal River Triathlon gives cyclists the nearby anchor event. Spring Lake Memorial Classic points riders toward shade tree draped roads and challenging hills, among the toughest in Florida.

Season: Homosassa Springs does not get a named best-months window in the brief, so locals read the race calendar and train around the heat. Summer gets specific in August, when Hot August Night Trail Race sends runners under the stars through the forest on singletrack. The course keeps things lively with packed sand or pine-needle paths with gentle ups and downs. Locals bring headlamps and save the hard efforts for when the sun backs off. Winter gets no listed change in the brief, so runners and riders can keep base miles, trail days, and triathlon prep centered on the same Homosassa Springs and Citrus Tract routes.
