500 Festival Running Events

The 500 Festival Running Events offer a series of races in Indianapolis, centered on the IU Health 500 Festival Mini-Marathon. This 13.1-mile course is largely flat, winding through downtown Indianapolis and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The event also features a 5K, which includes the USATF 5KM Championships. Additionally, the Miler Series provides 3-mile, 6-mile, and 10-mile races, serving as preparation for the half marathon. Virtual challenges, including 250-mile and 500-mile activity goals, are available from June to October, extending the series beyond the main event. The Mini-Marathon attracts over 20,000 runners, positioning it as one of the largest half marathons nationally. A pace car guides each wave at the start. Participants run a 2.5-mile lap on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway track, with many pausing to kiss the Yard of Bricks. The course is supported by thousands of volunteers and over 50 entertainment groups. The field includes a wide range of participants, from families and novices to elite athletes like Frank Shorter and Meb Keflezighi. The race is known as "The Greatest Spectacle in Running," reflecting its Speedway location and connection to the broader 500 Festival.

Indy Sprint Tri

Indy Sprint Tri is a sprint-distance race at Eagle Creek Park in Indianapolis, with triathlon, duathlon, aquabike, and relay options on the same event menu. The triathlon is a 500-meter swim, 10-mile bike, and 3-mile run; the duathlon swaps the swim for a 2-mile opening run before the same bike and final run; the aquabike keeps just the swim and bike. Relay teams can split the triathlon between two or three people, while duathlon relay teams use two people. Competitors must be at least 14 by the end of the race year, and the events run under USA Triathlon rules, so racers need either an annual USAT membership or a one-day membership for the event. The race is part of Tuxedo Brothers’ six-event sprint series, which also includes triathlon, duathlon, and aquabike races around the Indianapolis area. Eagle Creek Park gives the event a park-based setting rather than a city-street-only feel, and the short distances make it a practical choice for beginners while still giving experienced racers a fast, structured effort. Participants can earn overall, age-group, and division awards, and race shirts are offered in unisex sizing for those who register early enough. The series also has a bundle discount for people entering three or more events, plus a referral refund that gives money back when friends sign up through a racer’s link.

Big Foot Trail Run

The Big Foot Trail Run is a 5K and 10K race held at Monte Sano State Park in Alabama. It serves as the June event in RunningLane Events' Wild Thangs Trail Series, which continues within Monte Sano throughout the summer, using creature-themed names for its races instead of typical city or distance designations. The race takes place on the park's trails, offering a distinct experience compared to a road 5K or 10K. The Big Foot race is part of a lineup that includes Jackalope, Skunk Ape, and Chupacabra. RunningLane organizes these events in collaboration with the Alabama State Parks system.

About cycling & running in Indianapolis

Indy North-South Training Lines

Running: Locals run the Monon Trail when they want easy miles from downtown through Broad Ripple, Carmel, Westfield, and toward Sheridan. The Indianapolis Cultural Trail gives Naptown Run Club a clean Monday and Saturday rhythm from the Athenaeum. Indy Runners and Walkers uses the Cultural Trail, Downtown Canal, and Central Canal Towpath for steady miles, speedwork, and 1-8+ mile out-and-backs. Carmel Runners Club keeps Wednesday nights at Union Brewing Company and Saturday mornings at Java House in Midtown. Fort Harrison, Eagle Creek, Southwestway, Town Run, Cool Creek, and Skiles Test cover the trail fix. The 500 Festival Running Events, Wheeler Mission Drumstick Dash, The Full Mo, and Indy Half Marathon at Fort Ben anchor the calendar.

Cycling: Locals ride a good mix here, from the Indianapolis Cultural Trail and Canal Ride to long rural loops that feel made for base miles. Bicycle Garage Indy runs rides from North and Greenwood, Liv Cycling Indy keeps women’s rides going from March to November, and CIBA has Downtown Training Ride nights on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6 pm. The Cultural Trail loop is 8 km with 420 m of elevation. The 80 Mile loop runs up the Monon Trail to SR32, then north and back through Sheridan. The north side gets mostly rural with frequent rolling hills and a few larger hills. The south side has 6 km with 534 m of country hills.

Season: Spring and fall are the cleanest training blocks, and locals usually point to March-May and September-November for comfortable Z2, intervals, and long rides. Summer nights can be warm and humid, so the early club starts make sense, and the Summer Night Trail Run at Eagle Creek Park fits that July mood. Bicycle Garage Indy’s Thursday Evening Cruise rides run from May 2 to September 12, and the Greenwood Monday Night Fast Ride runs from June 3 to September 30. Winter shifts the vibe toward durability, with runners still circling toward the late-February Polar Bear Winter Classic and cyclists banking steadier miles when the fast evening calendar fades.
