It takes place in October and includes timed running, an untimed walk, and a virtual 5K option, allowing participation as racers, walkers, or remote supporters. The race supports breast cancer research, with 100% of registration fees donated to the Van Andel Institute in Grand Rapids via its Purple Community program. Bee Brave has been held for approximately twenty years. Since 2016, it has raised over $1 million, aiding individuals with breast cancer and commemorating those lost to the disease.
Midwest Canine Obstacle Run
SAT OCT 3
The Midwest Canine Obstacle Run challenges teams on wooded trails, creek beds, dirt, and water, with over 40 obstacles. All ages and abilities are welcome, focusing on the dogs. Food, live music, and camping are available. This event offers a unique kind of fun in the Midwest.
Franciscan Rhythms Trail 5K Run & Walk
SAT OCT 3
The Franciscan Rhythms Trail 5K Run & Walk is a fall 5K trail run and walk held on the Franciscan Life Process Center’s Lowell campus in Michigan. Now in its eleventh year, the event welcomes runners and walkers of all ages and fitness levels. It is structured more as a community day on trails than a competition solely for fast runners. Its unique feature is the opportunity to “Run with Nuns,” with proceeds supporting the center’s music therapy scholarship fund, its music therapy program, and land restoration efforts. The route winds through paths on the Lowell campus, crossing deciduous woodland, pine forest, and a restored prairie featuring native species. Live music stations are positioned along the trail, offering Irish, rock, and folk music that literally embodies the race's rhythm theme. The host organization has provided visual arts, music education, and therapy programs for over 50 years, and its Lowell and Grand Rapids campuses serve at least 300 music therapy clients weekly.
2nd Annual Shauna Smith Heroes 5K Trail Run / 2K Trail Walk
SAT OCT 10
The Heroes 5K Trail Run and 2K Trail Walk is a West Michigan charity event hosted by Shields of Hope for people affected by cancer. This is the 12th year for the event, which features a 5K trail run and a 2K trail walk. A clock will be available on site, though the event is not officially timed. The day honors Shauna Smith, a cancer survivor, and Thoe Kok, who is currently battling brain cancer. All are welcome to participate, with public safety, EMS, and military personnel particularly encouraged to join in full gear. Individuals touched by cancer are invited to run or walk to honor or remember a loved one.
Guiding Light 5K Run/Walk
SAT OCT 10
Sandhill Crane All Trail Half Marathon/10K/5K
SAT OCT 10
The Sandhill Crane All Trail Half Marathon/10K/5K takes place at Dr. T. K. Lawless County Park, an 820-acre park in Vandalia, Michigan. The event features a half marathon, 10K run/walk, 5K run/walk, and a 1K kids fun run, all utilizing unpaved park trails. The half marathon is a 13.1-mile non-repeat route, ensuring runners experience new terrain throughout. The course winds through forest and field, alongside streams and small lakes, with six bridge crossings. It is not flat, starting around 900 feet and climbing to a high point near 1,000 feet, incorporating hills into the trail running. Sandhill cranes are common in the area, inspiring the race's name and offering participants a chance to spot one. The event is limited to 500 participants, uses chip timing, and provides fruit at the finish. Finishers get custom long-sleeve performance shirts, top finishers receive laser-cut wood awards, and second and third place finishers in each age group receive medals. Proceeds benefit Dowagiac Rotary charities and Cass County Parks.
The Community Health Clinic 5k: Walk for Rare, Run for Hope
SAT OCT 10
The Community Health Clinic 5k: Walk for Rare, Run for Hope begins and ends at the clinic on East North Street in Shipshewana, Indiana, adjacent to the Pumpkinvine Trail and the Cove youth center. The primary event is a 5k run or walk along an out-and-back course, featuring a clock for participants who wish to monitor their own times. The morning also features a Kids Big Wheel Race for ages 3 to 7, with big wheels supplied. All funds raised support patient care at the Community Health Clinic, centering the event on a local health-care cause instead of a large race production. Participants receive a water station and complimentary snacks, with bake sale items available by donation. Medals will be awarded to the top three male and top three female finishers in the 5k. Registration is open on the day of the event, though shirts cannot be guaranteed for those who sign up late. Parking is available in the clinic lot, with additional space across the street by the dog park.
Spooky Sprint - Grand Rapids
SAT OCT 10
The Spooky Sprint in Caledonia, Michigan, southeast of Grand Rapids, is a Halloween-themed running event held annually at Caledonia High School. It offers a variety of race options, including a kids dash, an untimed 1-mile run, a 5K, 10K, half marathon, and a virtual race. A unique 'Volunteer then Run' entry is also available, allowing families and runners of all distances to participate together. The 5K, 10K, and half marathon feature chip timing, live results, awards, a custom bib, a designer shirt, and a finisher medal. The 1-mile run, though untimed, includes the main race's merchandise. The kids dash is designed for children 10 and under, providing a mini bib, youth shirt, and kids medal; children can participate in the dash without charge on race day if they forgo the swag. Finish-line treats and complimentary participant photos enhance the Halloween atmosphere, and the virtual race allows participation from any location while still receiving the shirt and medal.
Run and Creep 5k
SAT OCT 17
Grand Rapids Zombie Dash 5K
SAT OCT 24
Grand Rapids Zombie Dash 5k at Sixth Street Bridge 6:45pm Start
SAT OCT 24
The Grand Rapids Zombie Dash is a Halloween-season 5K in downtown Grand Rapids, starting at 6:45pm by the Sixth Street Bridge. Runners cover 3.1 miles on an urban course where zombies appear along the route, making the race more like a chase through the city than a standard road run. The course stays in the downtown setting, with the bridge area serving as the race base. All proceeds go to Hunt 2 Heal, a nonprofit that helps provide accessible outdoor adventures, giving the event a clear charity purpose beyond the costumes and zombie theme.
Alger Heights Halloween 5k
SAT OCT 31
The Alger Heights Halloween 5k is a neighborhood 5k fun run in Grand Rapids, Michigan, starting at 2404 Eastern Ave SE. It begins at 10:00 AM and concludes by noon, offering chip timing for all participants, whether they are aiming for a personal best, jogging with companions, walking, or moving in costume. This race is volunteer-led and describes itself as a “small town in a big city” event, aligning with its focus on the Alger Heights area rather than a downtown race atmosphere. The course winds through the Alger Heights neighborhood, connecting the race directly with the residents along the route. Costumes are a key element of the day, featuring a Community Costume Contest with awards; participation in the race is not necessary to enter this contest. The event also hosts a Neighborhood Cheer Contest for residents situated on the route, blending the 5k with a local Halloween gathering. This is the 14th edition of the series, and it contributes to community improvement within the neighborhood.

About 5K races in Kalamazoo-Portage

Kalamazoo-Portage Training Notes

Kalamazoo-Portage hosts 78 5K races in 2026 within 80 km of the city centre — upcoming dates, recurring series, and other races nearby, all in one place.

Locals run the Kalamazoo River Valley Trail when they want steady base miles, and the route spans over 22 miles while linking Kalamazoo with nearby towns. The Kal-Haven Trail is a 5-mile crushed limestone line from Kalamazoo to South Haven. Al Sabo Preserve brings over 25 miles of interconnected trails, and Asylum Lake Preserve gives trail runners approximately 274 acres where trails wind around the lake, through woodlands, and across open fields. Kalamazoo Area Runners anchors the social side. The Kalamazoo Klassic, Bronson Children's Hospital Run & Walk, Kindleberger 5k Run/Walk, and Kalamazoo Marathon keep the calendar honest.

The Kalamazoo Bicycle Club sets the tone for road miles, with Monday Nite Rides from Texas Drive Park and Wednesday Nite Rides from KalHaven Trailhead. Monday riders get VanKal at 20 miles or Lawton at 28 miles, and Wednesday riders get Bloomingdale at 44 miles or Kendall at 30 miles. The Tuesday Nite Women's Ride starts at Pedal South and uses the 25-mile Portage-Pavilion route. The Portage Bikeway gives commuters and Z2 riders more than 17 miles of shared-use trails plus over 35 miles of on-road bike lanes. Oakland Drive Hill and Maple Street Hill handle the intervals.

Summer owns the best months here, and Run Kalamazoo Move Through Summer makes the season feel relaxed and social. Groups form organically, water stops show up about every two miles, and runners can jump in for beginner 5K work, 10K work, or longer goals. Cyclists use summer for regular club rides, Ye Olde Flowerfest routes, gravel days, and steady base miles on Kal-Haven. Winter changes the rhythm, and winter Run Camp feels different from the summer setup. Locals still keep the legs moving, but runners and riders get more selective with routes, surfaces, and effort.
