ASICS Los Angeles Marathon

The ASICS Los Angeles Marathon is a 26.2-mile road race held in Los Angeles, typically in late winter or spring. It originated from the city’s Olympic growth and has been conducted in its present format since 1986. With approximately 26,000 participants, it is one of the five largest marathons in the United States. The race covers the standard marathon distance on city streets, with elite runners, mass-field participants, and charity teams competing together. Los Angeles hosted marathon-length races prior to the current series, under names like the Griffith Park Marathon, Los Angeles Lite Marathon, and Los Angeles Police Marathon. The inaugural race of the current series attracted 11,000 entrants, setting a record for the largest debut field for a marathon, despite operating at a significant financial loss. An unusual event occurred when a leading finisher was disqualified for taking a shortcut through a service station, awarding the victory to Lornah Kiplagat in her first marathon. The McCourt Foundation now utilizes the marathon to fundraise alongside other charitable organizations.

Coffee Lovers Run 5K/10K/13.1 LOS ANGELES

Coffee Lovers Run Los Angeles is a small group run in Palisades Park, offering 5K, 10K, and half-marathon distances. It is designed for runners and walkers, not just racers; all paces are welcome, minors may participate with a guardian, and each wave is limited to 15 participants. The event has a straightforward format, without timing chips or packet pickup. The shirt and other items are mailed to the registration address. The course follows a custom route within Palisades Park. The event maintains a small field size to ensure coordinator support and run pacers. Timing is optional; runners can record their own results using an app like Strava, submit them online, or request assistance from coordinators, with hand timing provided if the group is sufficiently large. Finishers get a medal and either a towel, giveaway, or custom mug. The coffee theme is present in an optional extras package featuring coffee samples. Registration may close by wave, with wait-list and virtual options. Each signup contributes to gifting a registration, including a shirt and medal, to an individual unable to afford it.

Halloween Trick or Trot Run 5K/10K/13.1 LOS ANGELES

The Halloween Trick or Trot Run is an annual Halloween-themed run in Los Angeles, held at Palisades Park. Participants can select a 5K, 10K, or half marathon. A family 1-mile fun run and a virtual option are also available. This event is organized as a smaller, private group run with limited waves, meaning entries may close once a wave is full. Running or walking is permitted, all paces are welcome, and individuals under 18 must be accompanied by a guardian. The event offers a more casual atmosphere than a chip-timed road race. Timing is optional; runners can use an app to track their progress, submit results online, or request assistance from coordinators with timing. Race bibs are distributed on race day, while shirts and other merchandise are mailed directly. Finishers are awarded a medal, a towel or other giveaway, online results, and a completion certificate. The Halloween theme is straightforward: participants receive candy post-run, and the event facilitates connections with local run clubs. For charitable giving, each mile completed after the race results in a $1 donation.

About cycling & running in Los Angeles

Los Angeles Training Notes

Running: Locals run Griffith Park when they want dirt, fire roads, Observatory loops, and that classic push behind the Hollywood sign. Runyon Canyon gives short, punchy climbs near Franklin and Fuller, while Silver Lake Reservoir, Echo Park Lake, Lake Hollywood Reservoir, and Elysian Park keep easy miles social. The Strand and Ballona Creek handle long Z2 days, and San Vicente works for quality sessions with a subtle incline. BlacklistLA, Koreatown Run Club, DTLA Running Group, Pasadena Pacers, LA Frontrunners, and L.A. Leggers keep the calendar full. The Los Angeles Marathon is the anchor event, with Turkey Trot LA 2026 and Venice Beach Half Marathon and 5k in the mix.

Cycling: Locals ride from the beach to the canyons, then pretend the climbing was the plan all along. PCH, Malibu, Palos Verdes, Marina del Rey to San Vicente, and the beach bike path through Hermosa cover base miles and fast group work. Griffith Park gravel rides stay close, while Angeles National Forest and the Santa Monica Mountains bring singletrack-adjacent gravel, steep fire roads, and proper gran fondo legs. Mt. Baldy, Mt Wilson, Mt Lowe, Angeles Crest Hwy, Saddle Peak, Latigo, Encinal, Deer Creek, and Glendora Mountain Road hold the climbs. RCCLA, Velo Club La Grange, LA Wheelmen, Pasadena Athletic Association, Montrose Ride, NOW Ride, and Critical Mass keep riders moving.

Season: Los Angeles trains year-round, but locals treat the calendar like a map of microclimates. Winter and spring make Topanga State Park, the Santa Monica Mountains, and the San Gabriel Mountains lush and in bloom, so trail runs, gravel days, and long climbs feel best then. August is the hottest month, and September and October can still bring heatwaves, so coastal routes matter. The beach runs about 10 degrees cooler than inland, which makes The Strand, Ballona Creek, PCH, and Santa Monica smart picks for summer Z2. Winter stays mild, and mountain weather can change quickly above elevation.
